Hello,

Please note that I’m not tech savvy!

I was advised to purchase tp-link AC1750 Mesh Wi-fi Extender to improve my signal to connect with a newly purchased Mega Quest 3 as signal is too poor to do so with my iPhone.

I can’t seem to get the AC1750 to fully light up because:

  1. I’m unsure whether it’s because I don’t have a password for the tp-link-extender wi-fi password on my iPhone as I cannot join this wi-fi network without one. The tp-link-extender  wi-fi has a tick next to it but is locked and it says there is no internet connection. I’m assuming I need this but I don’t know where I find the password as it’s not on the box  nor on the R450 device.
  2. It could be that it’s because my only source of internet is via my iPhone (Giff Gaff) (not computer: no broadband package ) as the second person I saw at the shop I bought it from said that that he was unsure whether it would connect with only the use of an iPhone? He did advise that I purchase a dongle?

Any advice anyone can offer would be gratefully received!

Hi,

First, a brand new RE450 doesn't have any password. It will only have passwords after you've connected it to a Wi-Fi network or set a password by yourself.
If your RE450 currently does have a password set and you don't know what it is, then reset the RE450 to factory default settings via the small recessed "Reset" button and any password(s) will be cleared.

TP-Link offers three methods to connect their range extenders to a Wi-Fi network.
1) by using the "Tether" app
2) via the extender's web management interface (requires a web browser)
3) the "WPS" method

Since the Hotspot feature of the iPhone likely doesn't have a WPS "button", you can't use method 3).

For 1) and 2) you will need an additional client device, because the one iPhone you use as your Internet hotspot can't work as a "router" (which is what the hotspot feature basically is) and client at the same time.

So you will need to find another client device you can use. Anything that has Wi-Fi and a web browser would do. (older smartphone, tablet, computer, game console, even a somewhat modern TV should work)

@woozle Hello Thanks for what you have written as that all makes sense. I'm sure if I follow through what you have said I need to do regarding options (1) and/or (2) I will finally get the pesky thing working!!
