Unable to set up W8980 as modem/router

Looking for some help. I have spent most of the day trying to set this thing up on PlusNet fibre (BT Infinity 2). I have set up plenty of routers mainly Dray-Tek but in order to save a few shillings I went for this but am beginning to regret it. I have been through every possible setting to no avail, and was eventually forced to use it in the wireless router mode using an openreach modem at which point I had no problems. I'm no expert but this appears to be a dsl problem so what could I be missing?
