Model: Archer VR400
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version:

I have a new good quality reconditioned HP EliteBook 540 G7 running Win 11, the first time I have used this OS. It initially connected to the internet with no problems. After partially setting it up, I now find that if I enable WIFI it not only won’t connect, but breaks the connection of other computers connected to the router until I toggle off WIFI again on the EliteBook.

I’ve spent too many hours checking and re-checking my internet settings, doing network resets and other tips on the internet, but no improvement. I have also tried restoring Win 11 to an earlier restore point and exiting antivirus/firewall.

Strangely, to me at least, I have managed to get workgroup file and printer setting working fine although to do so I had to enable ‘Enable insecure guest logins’ via edit group policies. Reversing this makes no difference.

I have an Archer-VR400 icon on the network connection screen and double-clicking that takes me to the router interface, but I’m afraid I don’t understand much that I see there, however I can see that the  Elitebook is listed under wireless clients. If instead of using the icon to get to the router I try to connect by typing 192.168.2.1 into my browser address bar, which is the way I usually access the router from my other machines, that doesn’t work.

I wonder if my router  just too old to cope with Windows 11?

Any advice will be very much appreciated.

The problem was caused by One-Drive, an MS app I didn't ask for and don't want, continuously trying and apparently failing to upload files. So far as I know I  never set it to do any such thing. As the connection problem was stopping the interface loading I couldn't disabel it, so I unistalled One-Drive.

WIFI now workng as nornal.

Thanks for taking an interest.

Windows 11 should obtain its IP address from your router without any hassle.

Here's a guide of how to find your router IP address.

Although the IP address 192.168.2.1 suggests that you may have more than one router in your LAN.

From the link that you provided, the Network configuration details show IPv4 Default Gateway as: 192.168.1.1  .  If I put this into the browser address bar I can log into the router. However 192.168.2.1 works just the same.

If I go to the command prompt and use ipconfig I get 192.168.1.1 for Default Gateway on all the machines in the workgroup.

I don’t know whether any of the following is significant but:
If I go into the router then Advanced > System Tools > Diagnostics I get the following when the Elitebook Wifi is toggled both on the Elitebook and another Win 10 desktop on the network.
    Test xDSL Synchronization                               Pass
    Test WAN Connection                                       Pass
Network Connection Status Inspect (NCSI)      Fail
Note: Please configure your DNS manually.

The Windows 10 desktop on the network which I am using to test connectivity when the EliteBook WIFI is toggled on shows both Ethernet and Wireless LAN networks using ipconfig. I seem to remember that is because the set up instructions for the router required one wired connection on the network.

The workgroup consists of two desktops (one Win 10 the other Win 7) plus a laptop (Win 7) and the EliteBook (Win 11).

As all these can contact the router and also each other (but not the internet if the EliteBook’s WIFI is toggled on), then is it possible that the problem is with a router setting and not the EliteBook and Win 11?

If all other devices are workin properly when connected to the VR400 then the issue should be on the Elitebook (Win11) network settings.

Here are typical VR400 LAN settings:

From your LAN you'e accessing the VR400 WebGUI on its LAN IP address which is 192.168.1.1.

There shouldn't be any LAN IP address like 192.168.2.1 on your network unless you're using a second router or something's wrong with Windows 11 Settings.

That means every wireless or wired client (mobiles, desktop, laptop) on your network should have an IP address in the 192.168.1.X / 255.255.255.0 subnet.

Sorry about the delay. No email notification for some reason.

This is what I have on that screen:

I notice that the laptop appears twice in the 'Client List' with the assigned IP addresses of 192.168.1.103 and 192.168.1.111.

I tested the connectivity of the laptop in a public space yesterday (the pub) and it worked fine

You have two DHCP servers configured in your VR400 - that's why it serves IP addresses in two different subnets - 192.168.1.0/24 and 192.168..2.0/24.

If you have connected your laptop by both Wi-Fi and cable, it should have received two IP addresses in the client list table.

Post a screenshot of the Interface grouping menu:

and the IPTV menu:

Do you use any IPTV service from your ISP ?

The laptop does not have an ethernet port, but two of the desktops using the router have both ethernet and wireless  connections.

Our TV uses the router but it is Freeview. My settings the same as your screen shot.

Thanks for the help!

Don't copy the settings from my screenshots - they are just an example which screenshots from your VR400 to post in the thread.

If you don't use any IPTV service you should disable these:

And IPTV feature:

Reboot VR400 and test if there's an improvement.

Not good I'm afraid:

Laptop managed one ping to Yahoo with 1666ms return and then timed out. Repear pings failed completely.

Internet to other devices broken while laptop WIFI toggled on as before: no access to iPlayer etc on TV.

Have reversed changes and am back to previous state with working TV.

Don’t know whether either of these events which may have coincided with the onset of the problems may be significant:

When setting up the laptop I had to ‘enable insecure guest logins’ in order to get file sharing on our small home workgroup to work.

In order to install some legacy software for which I had disks I bought a USB DVD drive: Chinese. Windows 11 was not listed under system requirements but described as working with W11 over the network. It did work and I remember at one time seeing XUM somewhere in the internet or network settings, but can’t find it again now.
