Region : France

Model : TD-W8961ND

Hardware Version : V3

Firmware Version : 3.0.0 Build 120524 Rel.05221

ISP : Orange

Hello,

I'm trying to upgrade the firmware to version TD-W8961ND_V3_140305, downloaded there: http://www.tp-link.com/en/support/download/?model=TD-W8961ND&version=V3
I follow the instructions, everythink seems to be ok but when it's done, the device info page still shows the old version. SysRestart (factory default settings) doesn't help. I turned off the modem, same thing.
I set modelcheck off with telnet (I read that in another thread), upgraded again, same thing.
Also with telnet, I checked the firmware version with "sys version":
RAS version: 3.0.0 Build 120524 Rel.05221
System ID: $2.12.58.23(G04.BZ.4)3.20.17.0| 2012/05/18 20120518_V003 [May 18 2012 17:14:08]
romRasSize: 1607050
system up time: 0:42:35 (3e644 ticks)
bootbase version: VTC_SPI1.22 | 2012/4/12

Like the device info page, it shows the old (stock) version. By the way it says the firmware is 1607050 bytes, while the 140305 version is 1551182 bytes. Then the firmware was definitely not updated.

I'm connected with ethernet to the modem. I used IE, as recommended in the pdf.

I'm satisfied with my modem, but since the release notes say the new firmware fixes some security issues, I'd link to upgrade.

Thanks.

Can you provide the screenshot of Status page?
The number after Build shows current firmware version. So it is still 120524 after firmware upgrade?

Yes it's still 120524:

I browsed the forum and saw that most of time, when an upgrade fails you get a "firmware file rejected" message or something like that. Here it's different, since everything happen like in the instructions: I see a progress indicator that goes up to 100%, then the modem reboots or something, and later when I refresh the page I see the version is still the same. Reset with factory settings doesn't help either. I tried twice. Antivirus/firewall disabled, ethernet link.

My issue looks similar to http://forum.tp-link.com/showthread.php?77915-The-firmware-won-t-update. I don't understand exactly whether the issue was resolved though.
Same problem, same model, just the version is different. A suggestion was to set modelcheck to off. I tried but it changes nothing.

I thought that maybe the devs forgot to change the version string in the firmware. But it's not the case, because with telnet I can see that the reported size of the firmware is still 1607050 bytes (like the 120524 version available on the tp-link site) while it should be 1551182 bytes (size of the 140305 version).
I don't know whether it's strange, but the newer firmware is smaller than the older one. Usually it's the opposite, because added things.

Before upgrade, reset the device first. Try different web browers like Chrome, Firefox etc., or try different computers to upgrade it. After upgrade, reset it again and check the firmware version.
By the way, you are upgrading the firmware locally, right?

Thanks, it works now!

I don't know exactly what fixed the problem. I reset the device first AND used Firefox to upgrade. Then it's the browser or the reset. More probably the reset in my opinion. Maybe because the password was not admin.

By the way, Firefox is my main browser. I only used IE because it was recommended in the upgrade instructions.
