Region : India

Model : TD-W8968

Hardware Version : V4

Firmware Version : TD-W8968_V3_150512

ISP : TATA Docomo DSL

Dear All,

I'm facing issues with connecting to Tata Docomo DSL. I have gotten each and every setting checked out with the ISP however, there is always an authentication issue while trying to connect with this router. Below is the excerpt from the syslog

Jan 1 01:02:42 daemon crit syslog: PPP server detected.
Jan 1 01:02:42 daemon crit syslog: PPP session established.
Jan 1 01:02:42 daemon warn kernel: netdev path : ppp0.1 -> atm0.1 -> atm0
Jan 1 01:02:42 daemon crit syslog: Using interface ppp0.1
Jan 1 01:02:42 daemon crit syslog: Connect: ppp0.1 <--> atm0.1
Jan 1 01:02:45 daemon crit syslog: PPP LCP UP.
Jan 1 01:02:48 daemon crit syslog: CHAP authentication failed
Jan 1 01:02:48 daemon crit syslog: PPP LCP DOWN.
Jan 1 01:02:48 daemon err syslog: User name and password authentication failed.

The same username and password work perfectly fine with the Zyxel modem provided by the ISP. Has anyone faced this issue before? What steps can I take here?

Did you tell your ISP that you are not using the modem given by them? Is it possible for your ISP to update username and password? Try to set up your W8968 with new username and password..
If the problem is the same, contact TP-LINK support directly.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, ISP knows that I'm using the TP-link router as the DSL modem. I'll try resetting the password with them. I was wondering if there are any settings I might have missed out?

I don't think so...VPI, VCI, connection type, username and password should be enough to set it up...
Did you contact support in India? Maybe they know more about your ISP and can give you some helpful advice.

Updates on this issue:

Tata DSL has MAC address binding in place which seemed to cause the DSL Authentication issues. I cloned the MAC address from my Zyxel modem into my TP-Link router and looks like its authenticating now.

However, the line is just not stable enough. I have an extended ping going on to 4.2.2.2 and barely 1-2% of the packets make it. It syncs for a maximum of 4 seconds and then gives up. The telephone line is absolutely ok as with works perfectly on the Zyxel modem. Below are the ADSL modulation settings:

Zyxel modem: ADSL2+ with AnnexA modulation
TP-Link router: All boxes ticked with AnnexL and AnnexM (refer screenshot)

I'm wondering whether the lack of AnnexA could be the problem?

Any suggestions on what could be causing this?

It's the weirdest thing. I had disabled UPnP last week and tried it, but nothing. The same disconnection issues.

Now, after keeping the router off for a week, and after having another crack at it today, its working good. Stable since the past 15 mins. Pings to internet IP addresses also look good. Will monitor it for some time to be sure.

Thanks again for all your help, Vivian :D

Ok, it seems I spoke too soon. It was working fine for almost 2 days and now suddenly the same DSL disconnection issues have restarted. Below is the excerpt from syslog:

RMA done. Problem still the same
2015-11-29 01:48:56
First off, apologies for reviving an age old topic. If I should raise a new topic, do let me know.

So the RMA was done and TP Link gave me with a new, box packed v4 version of this same router (previous one was v3). The problem remains the same though. I can barely get even a second of connection. The circuit builds up but then something happens and it just disconnects.

I configured this new router in the exact same way as the ISP's modem was configured. Attached below are the images of logs from the router.

Vivian, if you're still there, can you please help?
