I have bought an extender with one mesh capability and new AC2100 router. I have several devices in the house that only work on 2.4ghz and also requires that the phone is also connected to 2.4ghz network to communicate to each other. So my assumption is that one mesh will not work as it automatically jumps between 5 & 2.4 based on what it thinks is best and your device has one connection listed only which you fk t know whether it's 2.4 or 5. Are my assumptions correct?

im thinking that I have to set the extenders up so the they have two separate channels. 2.4 & 5 which the extenders have the ability to do and defeats the one mesh purpose

difficult to explain and would appreciate some feedback

Hi,

What is the exact model description of your AC2100 router? Is it the Archer VR2100(v)?

Normally routers will have one LAN network for all devices, no matter if connected via 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz or Ethernet cable, meaning a phone connected to 5 GHz would be able to communicate with other devices that are connected to 2.4 GHz or via network cable on a LAN port.

If you want dual-band devices to switch automatically between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, then you can enable the so-called "Smart Connect" feature in the router settings. But in case your "AC2100" router is some special model designed for ISPs, then it might not have this feature.

  @woozle

hi yes it's the Archer VR2100

the dual band feature can be enabled but the issue is that for example our robovac only operates on 2.4 ghz and I'm thinking that if the phone is on 5ghz it won't talk to the vac on 2.4 or is my assumption wrong?

the vac is very specific when setting up that you are connected to the same network.

im not enjoying the modem or extenders much at all at the moment they are not simple. At this stage i am unablr to log into the home page of the router. Got lucky once or twice now cant even get close

It is very common that for the initial setup of IoT devices the manufacturers require the user to connect their phone to the same network they want to connect the IoT device to. The dedicated phone app from the manufacturer will then just "copy" the wireless network information of the phone, send it to the IoT device (usually via Bluetooth) and the device gets connected automatically.

This is the manufacturer's way of making the setup "easy" for their users.

However, once the IoT device is successfully connected to the Archer VR2100 it doesn't matter whether the phone is connected to the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, the 5 GHz Wi-Fi or, if it was actually possible, one of the "LAN" ports, because they all connect you to the same local network.

Of course this only applies as long as you are not using a separated "Guest" network or isolated "VLAN's" (which the VR2100 doesn't support anyway, I think).

How are you attempting to log into the home page of the Archer VR2100? In case http://tplinkmodem.net doesn't work reliably, then try http://192.168.1.1 instead (or in case you have changed the VR2100's LAN IP address, then use the IP address you have set it to).
