Hello everyone,

I have a question regarding the settings for DoT (DNS over TLS) and DoH (DNS over HTTPS). When I have three DNS servers entered in my router, on what basis does the router decide which one to use?

I have Quad9 and NextDNS configured. On my laptop, NextDNS indicates that I am using Quad9, but at the same time, the logs show that the requests are going through NextDNS.

Are there specific criteria, such as priority, response times, or availability, that play a role in this? Or does it depend on the specific settings of the router?

I would appreciate your experiences and tips!

Thank you in advance!

  @SteveSe it's hard to say, it could be different for each OS, for Linux you would have to look at the glic source code to work this out, so if you are using the router address on clients that would be what's used.

But I can say the last time I looked at responses (on Linux a long time ago now) it appeared that a query was sent to each DNS server and I assumed the first non-error response used.

The introduction of encrypted communications probably wouldn't make a difference.

Other metrics like response time would introduce unacceptable overheads so that's probably not used.

  @raven-au

I have entered 3 DNS servers: Quad9, Cloudflare, and NextDNS. It seems like it either queries all of them at the same time or randomly selects one. However, both Cloudflare and NextDNS show me the DNS queries, and the two are actually only set up as backups.

It would be nice if a technician from TP-Link would get in touch
