Model: RE505X
Hardware Version: V6
Firmware Version:

tp-link Wi-Fi 6 Range Extender.  AX1500, RE505X.

I've installed and set up the range extender, and moved the plug and successfully positioned it upstairs near the dead area.  All lights are solid blue.

My iPhone has connected to it, and is able to get significantly faster speeds than on the main Sky wi-fi router.  However my laptop can't connect to the extender.  Even when I move and sit right beside the extender I get an error message 'connection failed'.

I'm on an older apple laptop, (OS Catalina) and I'm wondering if it isn't wi-fi 6 compatible?

By clicking Alt > wifi icon in menu bar, brings up some info regarding the wifi, and PHY is 802.11n which, with some google research, I think is wi-fi 4.

Some research online seems to indicate that the extender should be compatible, although it may not be able to supply the fastest speeds, but it should be able to connect, but I'm thinking that this information is incorrect?

Any advice from more technical folk much appreciated.

Michael

Hi,

Only the 5 GHz band of the RE505X supports Wi-Fi 6.

The 2.4 GHz band of the RE505X is still only Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n).

Therefore, if your Apple laptop can't connect to the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi of the RE505X either, then Wi-Fi 6 compatibility can't be the issue here.

I suggest you check the "Security" settings of the "Extended Network". In case it is currently set to "WPA3-PSK" or "WPA2-PSK/WPA3-PSK", then change it to "WPA2-PSK" for a test and see if that might work.

@woozle Thanks for that really informative reply!  The screen shot you included - how do I get to that window, do I need to download a driver onto my mac for that?

You just need a web browser.

First try the address http://www.tplinkrepeater.net .

If that doesn't work, then you need to use the actual IP address of the RE505X instead, something that looks like http://192.168.0.100 for example. (the IP address will be different in your case)

You can obtain that IP address from the client list of your main router or via TP-Link's "Tether" app.

@woozle Thank you.  Knowing what to look for, I went in via the Tether app and altered the Security for the 2.4GHz and then my iPhone askd to share the password wih my laptop, and I was linked up.   Thank you so much, I would never have worked that out!
