Model: Deco X80
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version: 1.2.2

Hi

I have had a Deco X80 (2 units) for a couple of years now and have always had little drop outs or connectivity issues. I can usually deal with them, but they are getting a little frustrating. I'd also like to make sure I take full advantage of the upcoming Australian NBN speed increase so making sure everything runs as well as possible. The firmware is up to date and I am happy to monitor and use both the app and web portal to configure the devices.

The issues normally come on 1 of 3 specific devices, my gaming computer, an LG TV and a TCL TV. These three devices connect to either the router (LG TV and computer) and the one satellite via 5GHz WiFi. The LG TV is also wired in to the router through a simple network switch into the back of the router.

On my computer I don't usually notice any drop outs but I do get a notification in my games (typically iRacing, very dependent on a good network connection with servers based in the US) that the network disconnected during a race. This can rarely cause me to drop out of a race or ghost out in the game. I have a PCI WiFi card and external antenna.

Both TV's, at all times of the day or night can lose network connectivity and need a reboot to reconnect to the network. This is frustrating for both my kids and wife who struggle to deal with the lack of connectivity and internet. The only way to get the TV's reconnected is the reboot them (switch off at powerpoint).

My questions are:

- What can I do to better diagnose and analyse the drop outs and issues. I have reviewed the logs on the router but they don't make a heap of sense. What should I be looking for?

- If this is a device issue, is this grounds to get it replaced?

- What other simple changes can I do to improve this?

Thanks

Kevin

May I have the hardware version of your Deco X80 units? You can find this info on the bottom of your deco units. While the app and or web ui may show the firmware is up to date this is a possibility of newer firmware that "may" fix your issue.

i would also make sure your network is set up using one of the examples in the post below

https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/forum/topic/98898 and that your network switch is compatible with deco routers. Here is a link to switches that are compatible with deco routers https://www.tp-link.com/us/home-networking/all-soho-switch/

Another thing it could be is bad Ethernet cables. Here is a great example of how a bad cable can cause problems https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/forum/topic/838210?replyId=1598872

For the WiFi side of things you could be running into network interference have you tried the Network Optimization tool? In the deco app click on More > Network Optimization > Scan

Need help with the Deco app, setup, Ethernet backhaul, network switch or rolling back firmware? Router or AP mode? https://community.tp-link.com/us/home/forum/topic/699816?page=1

  @HelpFixDecoApp

Hi, thanks for the reply. I believe I have a v1.0, assuming that the hardware version is indicated at the end of the S/N.

I have S/N: 222B2W....... US/1.0 (I am in Australia though, so hoping the US there is not an issue).

I can see I can improve my connectivity with Ethernet backhaul and possibly a different switch. I'll plan this out and see how I go.

Network Interference at a few locations around my house is all Perfect, so hope that is ok.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can do, especially on the hardware side.

You could buy a Ethernet cable tester to test each cable to see if they are good or bad. Trying to find the exact one that user bought in the post i linked to you because it was able to tell when the RJ45 plug was wired incorrectly.

Only other thing i can think of would be to either replace the X80 with a faster unit or add another X80 which could help to increase the range in your place and help with dead zones.
