Forgive my English.

My Tp-link WR840N is 3 years old and causing issues so I want to buy a BUDGET wireless router. I have cable internet of 4MB PPPoE connection.

I have two options (only want Tp-link): TL-WR845N and Archer C24 (cost more than double). We have 2 bedroom apartment, WR840N is enough in terms of coverage and performance and price of both WR845N and WR840N are the same.

So the question is:
Will there be any advantage of paying more than double for C24 if I only use 2.4Ghz?

I read about the differences between 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz and I assume if I only use 2.4Ghz then all 4 antennas will work as 2.4Ghz or 2 antennas work as 5Ghz and 2 antennas work as 2.4Ghz?

If you only plan to use 2.4 GHz, then honestly the Archer C24 won’t give you a big advantage over the WR845N for your type of internet speed (4 Mbps PPPoE). The main difference is that C24 is dual-band, while WR845N is only 2.4 GHz.

About the antennas - they are fixed hardware. On a dual-band router like the C24, some antennas are dedicated for 2.4 GHz and others for 5 GHz. If you disable the 5 GHz band, those antennas don’t suddenly “switch” to 2.4 GHz, they just stop being used. The router doesn’t make all antennas broadcast 2.4 GHz.

So if you don’t need 5 GHz at all and coverage with your current router is already enough, I would say WR845N is the more budget-friendly choice and should serve you fine

Here's a link comparing the specifications of the Archer C24 and TL-WR845N. If you only want to use 2.4 GHz, you can disable 5 GHz. Go to Advanced > Wireless > Wireless Settings.

  @Vendex Thanks for reply and sorry late reply.

That was the answer I was looking for, especially about the antennas. Yeah I have no plan to use 5Ghz and I was not sure if all 4 antennas will work as 2.4Ghz if I disable 5Ghz. So it's better to have 3 antennas with WR845N rather than 2 with Archer C24 and save the money.

Thanks again for detailed clarification. 

I asked the same question on Tom's Hardware forum and I got many replies but they all took my post to another senseless level instead of this kind of simple clarification.
