Model: ER605 (TL-R605)
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 2.3.0

Hello,

I have switched my 5G modem to an outdoor unit, the Zyxel NR7302, running in passthrough mode (so it receives two external IPs and passes one of them to the router).

However, the ER605 is unable to refresh the WAN IP after the network provider provides new IPs, this happens periodically between once a day or once a week.

The online detection of the ER605 is enabled, it even shows offline (but keeps the old WAN IPs in the interface), but is obviously unable to refresh the WAN IPs automatically.

This results in my entire network being offline until I manually fix this.

I tried to confirm if this is a router or modem issue by placing a fritzbox 4050 between the zyxel modem and the omada router, having the omada router as DMZ in the fritzbox NAT.

The fritzbox also detects the network changes after the periodic modem reset, but is able to refresh the external IP withouth any manual interacation.

So it really seems to be an issue on the side of the Omada Router ER605.

Any suggestions? are there any settings i need to change? or downgrade the firmware?
I would really like to stick with my omada router, but without a double-nat due to the additional use of the fritzbox.

Thanks for any advice,

Ruediger

Thank you for your post.
Does your network provider update the public IP only once a day or once a week? Can you confirm that these updates coincide with the WAN-offline events? How did you verify this? Are there any alerts or logs showing that the ISP changed the IP right before the ER605 WAN went offline?

When the WAN is offline, please try pinging the new WAN IP (or 8.8.8.8) from a PC on the LAN and let us know the result. Also, confirm that this same PC can reach other LAN devices and the router itself without any issues.

It looks like there may be a compatibility problem between the modem and the ER605. You might want to ask your ISP if they have any recommendations for this scenario. Additionally, try adjusting the MTU on the ER605’s WAN port—either increase or decrease it—to see if that resolves the issue.

At the same time, please check the router’s logs when the WAN goes offline to see if any related events are recorded.

Finally, how are you managing the ER605—through the Web UI or the Omada Controller?

Thanks for your reply.

The IP updates don't occur on a fixed schedule, but sometimes they happen every 24 hours, then it stays the same for several days.

The WAN offline issue is definitely linked to that event, I used an omada software controller, most recent version on an ubuntu server.

The omada logs show several times the following error when the modem refreshes the IP:

After that, the WAN connection tab of the router still shows the old external IP, but also connection status offline. But it does not restart the connection automatically at all.

I cannot ping anything external because the omada is offline, internal devices are reachable normally, so definitely an issue between modem and router...

The ISP (a1 in austria) was not very helpful, only recommendation was to use the fritzbox provided...

I have not entered any values for MTU yet, thought it uses some kind of standard value automatically. which values should I try?

Thanks for additional suggestions.

Kind regards, Ruediger

I have 5G based internet at home, i had to tune my MTU ont he WAN port of my ER605 down quite a bit to avoid packet fragmentation, after that i no longer had any issues with DHCP on the WAN port

My ISP supply a ZTE MC888A (awful, buggy peice of barely functional garbage) , i enabled bridge mode on it as well
