Model: OC300
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.34.18 Build 20260506 Rel.79284

Description / Current Behavior:

Currently, only a few select configuration windows in the Omada Controller include a brief "Description" field. In most cases, these description boxes have very strict character limits. As a result, it is virtually impossible to document why a specific setting, firewall rule, VLAN, or profile was configured a certain way, or to leave crucial context for other administrators (or our future selves).

Network environments change, and without a dedicated space for comments, it is easy to forget the original intent behind a specific configuration over time.

Requested Features:

1. Universal "Notes / Comments" Field

  • Implement a dedicated "Notes" or "Internal Description" text box for every single setting page and configuration item (e.g., specific Port configurations, DHCP reservations, Routing rules, VPN profiles, Wireless networks, etc.).

  • Unlike the basic "Description" field, this should support a larger character limit (or be a rich-text box) to allow for detailed explanations.

2. Hover-to-Read Context

  • Any setting that contains a saved note should display a small indicator icon (e.g., a note or info icon 📝) in the main dashboard view.

  • Hovering the mouse over this icon should reveal the saved note in a tooltip, allowing administrators to quickly read the context without needing to open the full edit menu.

Value / Benefits:

  • Built-in Network Documentation: Keeps configuration logic directly inside the Omada Controller, eliminating the need to maintain external, easily-outdated documentation files (like Excel sheets or text files).

  • Better Team Collaboration: If multiple administrators manage the same network, they can easily leave notes explaining the reasoning behind specific tweaks, reducing the risk of accidental rollbacks or misconfigurations.

  • Easier Troubleshooting: When troubleshooting an issue months down the road, having a detailed note explaining why a rule was created helps determine if it can be safely modified or deleted.

Hi  @KrispPL

Thanks for posting here.

Would you mind giving an example? For instance, when you set up a VPN, what kind of notes do you need?

Some examples will help us better understand the requirement, and will also add the possibility of incorporating this into our future plans. Thanks.

@Vincent-TP For example, a field that could explain why this NAT is set and why this way. Currently, Name field is only 64 characters long. But scope of this information I may want to include is:

NAT Rule: CloudFlare to NAS Storage HTTPS

  • Status: Active (Since: June 26, 2026, Author: John Doe)

  • Ticket: TICKET-4042 (Board request for remote file access).

  • Purpose: Enables remote employees to securely access NAS resources (10.10.10.10:443) via the files[.]company[.]com domain.

  • Security: Traffic MUST route through Cloudflare (hence the Source IP restriction to the CF subnet). Geoblocking (Poland only) and WAF rules are enforced on Cloudflare. Direct traffic to the WAN IP of the router is dropped.

  • Business Impact of Disabling: Sales reps will lose access to offers and contracts while off-site. This completely halts the sales pipeline.

  • Rule Review: Required annually (Next review: June 2027).

@Vincent-TP And for the consitency sake. Some features already has Description field like Application filter Why that cannot be everywhere? And furthermore, ability to even take a snapshot of entire documentation with one button click?
