Model: ER605 (TL-R605)
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.2.0 Build 20220114 Rel.76871

Hello. I've had this problem with a couple routers before this one, so I'm hoping someone could help with my issue. We pay for gigabit fiber internet and we do sometimes achieve those speeds. But a lot of times the internet goes back to being capped at 100mbps. And it's not just through ethernet, every device connected gets the same speeds. As for the "modem", there is none. It's a cable that has a coupler on it which I connect one end of an ethernet cable to and the other to the router. And I also have an access point which is my previous router (Archer AX11000). Again these issues happened with a couple router before my current one.

Things I have tried:

- Updating router firmware on both the router and AP

- Connecting an ethernet cable from the coupler to my PC to check speeds (which are at target gigabit speeds)

- Trying 10 different ethernet cables ranging from cat 5e to 8

- Changing the WAN port speed to 1000m Full-Duplex, as well as every other port.

- Unplugging the AP and using only the router

- Calling my ISP for help

I'm not sure what else to do.

Not sure. It sounds like a compatible problem. ER605 works well with my modem, but your connection is not even a "modem" Maybe try add a hub/switch between the router and the "coupler Ethernet cable"?

  @3287bluehawk

From fiber cable you should have some "Gigabit Ethernet Media Converter".

Something like: mc220l or dmc-g01lc

Did you tried to swap this to another one ?

I have a giga fiber and in past 2 years changed 3 ISP - each one was setting up own fiber connection with own media converter (never had issue with speed).

The 100/1000 speed cannot be set on media converter - it should adopt itself to connected hardware.

Since you have zero issue with connection fiber-pc, may be the media converter somehow affects the speed on router side ?

  @3287bluehawk

It's almost guaranteed to be the cheap/faulty coupler, seen this too many times with them. If you can eliminate the coupler by using a longer good quality cable that would be best. If not, buy a high quality CAT6 coupler or keystone coupler from a reputable manufacturer.

  @3287bluehawk . "It's a cable that has a coupler on it which I connect one end of an ethernet cable to and the other to the router." care to share a picture of that whole concoction ?

  @dsj In fact I would even put my money on most of that upstream cabling beign wrong.

  @3287bluehawk also tell us if all the involved ethernet links are negotiating at gigabit speed and that you are absolutely sure you are not exceeding cable lengths somewhere.
