Hi All,

This post provides a comprehensive guide on how to upgrade or downgrade the firmware version of Omada Switches. We hope that this information proves helpful to those who may need it.

 

Notice:

  • If your model is not an Omada switch, you may not be able to downgrade your firmware. We do NOT recommend non-Omada switch owners to downgrade their switches.
  • We recommend you perform any upgrade/downgrade during maintenance time and physically stay with the target device.
  • We recommend the latest Chrome/Firefox for firmware upgrade/downgrade. Incognito/Private mode is recommended for firmware upgrade/downgrade.
  • The firmware downgrade shares the same process as the upgrade. The downgrade and upgrade of the firmware will not erase the settings on your switch. But, if you skip too many versions, there is a possibility that your settings will be lost. We also do NOT recommend you skip and downgrade too many versions.
  • Newly added features by firmware update will be lost after the downgrade. The same thing happens to the parameters you have set for them.
  • For any firmware upgrade, please ensure that you have stable power to the target device and we recommend you use a direct Ethernet connection to the target device. Any disconnection may cause system damage to the device. If your device is bricked, we are NOT able to help you recover it by flashing firmware. Please follow the guide carefully and do it at your discretion.

 

Upgrade/Downgrade in Standalone Mode

 

Step 1  Download the firmware file

 

  • Go to the website https://www.tp-link.com and search for your Omada Switch model.

  • Download the proper firmware file on the support page of the gateway.

  • Unzip/extract your firmware from the compressed folder. You may need software such as WinZIP or WinRAR to extract the firmware file to a folder.

 

 

Step 2  Access Omada Switch web management interface

 

  • Enter the IP address of your switch. You can find your switch IP address on your DHCP client list on your router or you can use Omada Discovery Utility to scan your switches.

 

  • Enter the username and password of your switch to log in. If your switch is a brand new one or reset, use the default username and password that are both admin.

 

Note:

  • If you have trouble accessing the page, please use Incognito Mode (Chrome) or Private Browsing (Firefox) and double-check your connection.
  • To install the Omada Discovery Utility, please install the Java environment. Refer to this article: How to Install TP-Link Omada Discovery Utility on Windows and macOS PCs
  • Omada Discovery Utility can only discover models that are Omada compatible. If your model is not listed here, then you cannot use Omada Discovery Utility to find its IP address. You may try other ARP scan software to find your switch IP address.

 

Step 3  Firmware Upgrade/Downgrade

Before you start to upgrade, please read the following paragraph carefully.

If you wish to keep the current image after upgrading and configure it to reboot with the backup image manually, leave "Reboot the switch using the backup image after upgrading is completed" unchecked, and click Upgrade. It will take several minutes to upgrade, please wait and do not perform any operations.

Choose the menu SYSTEM > System Tools > Boot Config, here the image table shows that the next startup image is image 1, the backup image is image 2, and new firmware has been upgraded and mapped to image 2. With the current boot config, the switch will always start up with image 1, thus the new firmware will not take effect.

If you need to activate the new firmware, set the next startup image as Image_2.bin, and the backup image as Image_1.bin, and click Apply. Then choose the menu SYSTEM > System Tools > System Reboot > System Reboot, you can reboot the switch immediately or create a reboot schedule to make it take effect. Note to check "Save the current configuration before reboot" and then click Reboot. After rebooting, the switch will run the new firmware.

 

  • Go to SYSTEM > Firmware Upgrade.
  • If you wish to keep the current image after upgrading and configure it to reboot with the backup image manually, leave "Reboot the switch using the backup image after upgrading is completed" unchecked, and click Upgrade. It will take several minutes to upgrade, please wait and do not perform any operations.

 

 

  • Click Browse and look for the firmware that you are going to upgrade/downgrade. Select and Open the BIN file. The file will be uploaded to the switch.

 

 
  • Then, your firmware upgrade begins. During the upgrade/downgrade, please do not unplug the power cable or Ethernet cable on the switch. Do not refresh the web page. After the upgrade, the switch will automatically reboot and get back to work. This may take a few minutes

 

 

 

Upgrade/Downgrade in Controller Mode

Sometimes, your switch cannot be adopted by the Omada Controller due to adaptability, please refer to the upgrade/downgrade guide above in standalone mode. If the switch was adopted before and now shows up as disconnected, you can reset the switch and perform the downgrade by following the steps above. Related settings will remain on the Controller as long as you don’t reset the controller.

 

Step 1  Download the firmware file

 

  • Go to the website https://www.tp-link.com and search for your Omada Gateway model.

  • Download the proper firmware file on the support page of the gateway.

  • Unzip/extract your firmware from the compressed folder. You may need software such as WinZIP or WinRAR to extract the firmware file to a folder.

 

 

Step 2  Access Omada Controller web management interface

  • Enter the IP address of your controller. Or launch it from your controller-installed computer.

 

 

Note:

  • If you have trouble accessing the page, please use Incognito Mode (Chrome) or Private Browsing (Firefox) and double-check your connection.
  • There are several formats of controller IP, please identify them according to your situation:
    • https://localhost:8043/
    • https://127.0.0.1:8043/
    • https://target_computer_ip:8043/
    • https://hardware_controller_ip

 

Step 3  Firmware Upgrade/Downgrade

 

  • Click the Devices tab, and click your target device. On the page of Config, scroll down and find the Manage Device section.

 

 

  • In Custom Upgrade, click Browse to look for the firmware that you are going to upgrade/downgrade. Select and Open the BIN file.

 

  • Then, your firmware upgrade begins. During the upgrade/downgrade, please do not unplug the power cable or Ethernet cable on the switch. Do not refresh the web page. After the upgrade, the switch will automatically reboot and get back to work. This may take a few minutes
