Model: TL-SX3008F
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version: Build 20231011 Rel.42220

I have an SX3008F (hardware 1.20 or 1.6 depending on where you look) which is "fresh" in that I…

  • …have updated to the latest firmware release (Build 20231011 Rel.42220).
  • …have not done any interesting configuration. For example, the only VLAN is the default.

Into this switch I have inserted a TP-Link SM5310-T 10GBASE-T RJ45 SFP+ module.

The module works as long as it's in the ports on the left i.e. ports 1 and 2..

As far as I have been able to tell, the module does not work in any other port. Even when it is the only module in any port.

This makes it seem likely to me that if I buy more of these 10G modules they will not work in other ports either.

I have other TP-Link modules in other ports, and they work fine there, but they aren't 10G. (They are 1G.)

If I can't have many 10G modules in this switch, that would defeat my purpose in having bought it.

I will append a transcript of what it looks like in the console when I insert the 10G module in various ports.

Any hints welcome.

Hi @integerpoet

Thanks for posting in our business forum.

5310 only supports 10Gb. As your OP wrote, it could be a problem when you connect the 1G SFP on the rest of the ports which makes their link speed to 1Gbps.

Can you manually change them to Auto or 10Gbps and see if they work on them? If you previously set them to the 1Gbps, which is fixed, that will not link SM5310 because it does not support 1Gbps and fixed link speed does not work of course.

Hi @integerpoet

Thanks for posting in our business forum.

10G module would work without changing any link speed.

Not to mention if it is a TP-Link one. SM5310-T is the one we recommend for the SFP+ switches.

I would only worry about the heat from this module which might affect the surrounding ports.

Installation guide for this module. https://static.tp-link.com/upload/manual/2023/202311/20231124/7106510561_SM331T(UN)1.0_IG.pdf

  @Clive_A

As mentioned, the module is indeed TP-Link SM5310.

As mentioned, the behavior does not change even when this is the only module in the switch, so heat buildup due to adjacency isn't the issue. (In fact, I am not really even using the switch yet but merely testing various aspects before deployment, so no heat is getting a chance to build up anyway.)

I can't explain why the console would say the switch changed the link speed of a port with SM5310 inserted, but my guess would be that it's because the port previously had a 1000M module inserted.

I'm not sure I understood that response, but in any case...

After resetting the switch to factory defaults — several times and for unrelated reasons — I inserted the 10G module into the third port and…

It seems to work fine now.

I thought I had been methodical in testing before posting my question, but it now seems I must not have been.

And, for whatever it's worth, the computer which is connected to the 10G module only has 1G.

(This isn't the configuration I want. I just wanted to try again after a reset and cycling power.)

I also have 1G modules inserted into other ports and they are working fine as well.

So now I have no idea why I was so convinced the 10G module would only work in the first or second port.

Anyway, thanks for the help.
