Model: EAP650-Outdoor
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.2.5

Hi,

I built a network of Omada Devices, with one Gateway, 3 switches, 1 Controller and 5 EAPs.

Now my intention was to get wifi/internet to an appartment which can be reached by the wifi of EAP650-Outdoor.

I wanted to use a simple Consumer Wifi-Extender with LAN-Port (for TV ...) that can be put in wall socket and to make a clear cut between the Omada (Core) network with management VLAN etc. and the appartment Wifi/LAN which will be used by tenants.

Tried first AVM Fritz!!Repeater 1200 AX which should be usable in every Wifi network but it was not...

When a client is connected to the repeater, there is MAC/ARP confusion. The Omada Client list shows then the Repeater with the same IP that the Client has and connection between Repeater and Omada Gateway via the EAP650 has Ping timeouts in regular distances (picture below). I think this happens because of the confusion in ARP table and back-routing of my ping.

The other problem, from a device in Omada network (Client in that appartment network) it was not possible to Ping or access Webinterface of the Repeater. It was only possible when the Client was next to the AVM Repeater and connected to it.

Ping Timeouts

So I ordered TP-Link RE700X and connected it to the EAP.

The MAC confusion did not happened or showed in client list but the connection was not better.

Clients in appartment network do not get IPs by DHCP Server of the Gateway.

When I use DHCP-Server of the Repeater, they get IPs but Clients on the Omada side do not get.

And I have to ensure that Clients get connection whatever Wifi Sender they use to connect to the network.

Is this expected behavior, that a EAP Wifi can not be repeated by anything other that another EAP in Omada Mesh?

I am thinking now about the use case when somebody uses the WLAN to LAN converter boxes to bring single devices with only LAN port online. These will also need a own IP and one for the end device.

A hope that someone can give me a hint or explain this problem.

Best Regards!

Hi  @sv3063h

That worked first for maybe 1 minute, but than I got the DHCP decline messages in the Repeater Log and it was the same effect as if I use Gateway DHCP.

>>> I should be more clear. I was saying, enable the DHCP server for both the Omada gateway and the RE700X. Did you try this?

Hi  @sv3063h

>>> nope, the RE700X should be able to link to the EAP650-outdoor.  And you don't need to enable the DHCP of the RE700X.

Clients in appartment network do not get IPs by DHCP Server of the Gateway.

>>>What's the LED status of the RE700X  after the config? Please check the supported channels of both the RE700X and EAP650-outdoor, then set the EAP's channel to one that is also supported by the RE700X. Only then can they work together properly.

(Config > Radios > Channel)

To block the communication between the tenants and the main network, you can enable guest network of the SSID.

  @Vincent-TP

Okay, thanks for the answer!

All LEDs were on/blue after config.

I would try again this evening and only use the 2.4 Ghz mode were I set a fixed channel of 6 which should be supported by both devices...

Are there other options in Wifi/EAP/Switch/Gateway (DHCP) what I should set to let all devices in that network communicate and allow DHCP through Wifi Devices?

The Guest Network Mode is not necessary because it is a separate VLAN through the system.

  @Vincent-TP

Hi again,

I was not successful with the repeater in 2.4 Ghz. I did a factory reset and connected it only using 2.4 Ghz to the EAP.

Set fixed IP address for the repeater and disabled DHCP server so there is no conflict with gateway DHCP.

When I walk with my laptop in the area of the repeater, the connection drops and I cannot get IP address.

Then I set a fixed address on my Test Laptop and got stable connection.

This is DHCP config:

This was APIPA address or sometimes the IP was gone 1 second after DHCP-Server assigned it:

There are logs in Omada Controller for DHCP decline by Test Client (this is the MAC following):

But of course there was no other client in wifi with that address or at all and the repeater had its static IP.

Please help with getting this running, I need to bring that to my customer next week or switch to another hardware :/

Best Regards!

Hi  @sv3063h

Thanks for the info.

It seems like that the Omada didn't assign IP address to the laptop.

Please try the following and see if it helps:

1. give the RE700X a fixed IP address;

2. Enable the DHCP server on the RE700X;

If still no help, please let us know the following info:

  1. What's the firmware version of the RE700X?
  2. If connect it to another network with DHCP disabled, will it work?
  3. Apart from the test laptop, is it possible to test with other wireless clients, such as a mobile phone? will it obtain a valid IP address?

  @Vincent-TP

Hi,

it is RE700X(EU)_V1_1.1.4 Build 20230509 Firmware from 2023-07-14.

When I connect it to another network like Fritz!Box, the repeater works as expected.

Yes, I put another PC which was not connected to that network before to the LAN port of the RE700X and it was exactly the same error. The IP from DHCP server disappears from the client 1 second after it gets assigned.

Hi  @Vincent-TP

the RE700X has a fixed IP and I tried the DHCP on it yesterday.

That worked first for maybe 1 minute, but than I got the DHCP decline messages in the Repeater Log and it was the same effect as if I use Gateway DHCP.

Now I tried another thing and connected the RE700X to my own office network which uses Omada Switches, Contoller and EAPs and there was no problem with that RE700X Repeater (going to try the AVM Fritz!Repeater now). The only difference is, I do not use the Omada Gateway ER605 but an OPNsense Firewall and Microsoft DHCP Server instead.

So the main problem could be the config of Gateway DHCP-Server or it´s impact of the Omada Switches?

Best Regards

Hi,

this sounds like a workaround but I need to understand what the devices do...

I disabled ARP-to-Unicast Conversion on Wifi und Spanning-Tree on the Switches (both are default settings now) and it seems to work.

Hi  @sv3063h

Glad to hear that works.

In such scenarios, commercial-grade routers like Omada may limit "many-to-one" RE connections, possibly assigning only a single IP address.

ARP-to-Unicast Conversion: When enabled, the controller will convert ARP packets into unicast packets.

Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) is a Layer 2 Protocol that prevents loops in the network.
