Model: EAP653
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version:

Hi all, this is my first post on any kind of forum so apologies if I mess something up or if my terminology is incorrect.

I am currently running 3 no. EAP653s and 1 no. EAP610 from a ES220GMP. I have ran Cat 6 from each room to a patch panel, then patch leads to the switch. All was working well until I had a power cut (something tripped the breaker) and now one of my EAP653s are no longer working as intended.

Prior to the power cut, everything was working well. Now, this EAP still receives power (via POE), but no longer receives data, and is only working via a mesh network by uplinking to my other EAP.

My troubleshooting steps have been:
- Testing the cable pairs (the 1 to 8 cable tester) which showed everything was fine
- Reterminating both the patch panel and the RJ45
- Plugging the EAP directly into the switch, which worked
- Trying another EAP in the 'faulty' line, and the same thing happened there, it isolated itself.
- Plugging my laptop into the 'faulty' line and it wont connect to the internet, but does on another line from the switch.

According to my steps, this tells me that my line is faulty for whatever reason, could anyone tell me what my next steps would be to fix this? I won't be able to pull a new line as it is through multiple walls and ceilings and floors, it's just not an option unfortunately. Thank you all in advance!

Hi  @mutc

Thanks for posting here.

As you mentioned , your test results are already quite clear—it's highly likely that the network cable is the issue. There is little we can do from EAP or switch side.

If replacing the network cable is nearly impossible, you can try switching to a different port on the switch / patch panel.

If that still doesn’t work, then you’ll have to stick with the mesh connection until it’s convenient to rewire.

@Vincent-TP thanks for the response. I now have another issue, it seems as though the wire is fine, but whenever I plug my AP onto Port 8, Port 7 doesn't work and vice versa. When I look at the switch's activity lights, the lights for Port 7 work fine, then when I plug my AP into Port 8, the light for 7 turns off, and Port 7 and 8 have a dance on whose light should stay on, it really is strange. Ive bought another AP to see if its the AP causing the issue, but the same thing happens. What do you think could be causing this?

Hi  @mutc

Here are the most probable causes and solutions:

1. Power Over Ethernet (PoE) Overload

If there are many POE clients plugged in, plugging in two APs might exceed capacity, causing the switch to disable one port.
   - Solution:
     - Check the switch’s PoE power budget

2. Faulty Switch Hardware or Firmware
   - Problem: A hardware defect or firmware bug could cause port instability.
   - Solution:
     - Test the ports with non-PoE devices (e.g., a laptop) to rule out PoE issues.
     - Update the switch firmware.
     - If the issue persists, try resetting the switch to factory defaults.

3. MAC Address Flapping or Loop Detection
   - Problem:If the switch detects the same MAC address rapidly moving between ports (e.g., due to a misconfigured AP), it may disable a port.
   - Solution:
     - Disable Mesh temporarily to avoid any loops generated.

Troubleshooting Steps:
1.Test with Non-PoE Devices: Plug laptops into Ports 7 and 8 simultaneously. If they work, the issue is likely PoE-related.
2. Swap Ports/Cables: Test if the problem follows a specific port or cable.
3. Factory Reset the AP:Ensure the AP isn’t misconfigured (e.g., creating a rogue network loop).

If none of these resolve the issue, the switch itself may be faulty. You may contact your retailer for help.
