Hello.

Due to planned changes in the location of my Omada devices (installing the router, switch, and controller in a 10-inch rack), I'd like to ask an unusual question to owners, especially the ER706W (which is what I have):

Has anyone tried connecting the antennas included with the router using an extension cable? I'm referring to situations where the antenna is connected to the router via, for example, a 3-meter cable.

How does this work, and which cable should I choose? Someone might ask why – I want to avoid situations where a metal rack interferes with the Wi-Fi signal.

@Ronczkos I have deployed exactly the kind of setup you describe. It works excellently as long as you follow some due diligence.

  1. Use the thickest, lowest attenuation coax cable for the extensions as you can, and keep them as short as possible for the application.
  2. Get extensions from a reputable source that uses genuine cable. I got mine from data-alliance[dot]net/rp-sma-extension-cables. Mine are 4ft and use LMR-200 coax.
  3. Make sure the distance between antennas is not a multiple of any wifi channels' f0 wavelength (1/4λ, 1/2λ, 1λ, 2λ, etc.) and is at least 1λ. I would recommend 23.75cm between antennas (47.5cm total), since this fits nicely in the width of a network cabinet.

I adhered a length of aluminum angle to the top of the network cabinet and drilled holes into it for the RP-SMA female connectors. I used the orignal antennas on the ends of the extensions.

  @Ronczkos

You can use a 2.4 GHz & 5 GHz dual-band antenna with an RP-SMA female connector as a replacement; however, we are unable to provide or recommend any specific brands.
