Model: OC220
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version:

Hello,
I would like to install a private network at a friend's house.

It is estimated that 4 stitches and 5 Wifi 6 access points will be required.

Now the question is whether I should order an OC220 or an OC300.
The OC300 is certainly oversized, but you never know.
The OC220 is the newer one and will presumably be supported for longer.

What can an OC300 do that an OC220 can't?
Is the OC220 equally fast in terms of operation and response time?
I use an OC200 myself, and it's sometimes very slow :(

I wanted to compare the OC220 and the OC300 on the TP-Link website, but unfortunately there is hardly any data available for the OC300, many fields are empty :(
I don't understand why TP-Link doesn't provide all the information.
The power consumption of the two controllers might also be interesting, since they run 24/7.

Does anyone have an OC220 or OC300 in use and can help me out?
THANKS :)

Hi @lukass2000,

See below for the head to head data.

I have the oc200 and oc300 and I wouldn't recommend getting the oc200 unless it's free because of the performance.  The oc220 however has a significant boost in it's processor and memory compared to the oc200 and the performance is probably on par with the oc300.  Between the oc220 and oc300, it may just depend on the mounting options and/or a little price difference.  Does your fiend like everything neatly racked or are they the type of person who's ok with everything sitting in a closet on a shelf?

OC220

Processor: Quad-Core A53 @ 2.0 GHz/Core

Memory: 2 GB DDR4

Storage: 4MB Nor Flash; 8 GB eMMC

Max Power: 11.2 W (powered by a PoE device, with USB 2.0 connected); 3.5 W (powered via Micro-USB port, no USB 2.0 connected)

USB Port: 1 v2.0 (Only usable when powered by POE)

Misc: Small form factor; optional POE or Micro USB

OC300

Processor: Quad-Core A72 @ 1.2 GHz

Memory: 2 GB DDR4

Storage: 2MB Nor Flash; 8 GB eMMC

Max Power: 9.0 W (no USB 3.0 connected); 14.8 W (with USB 3.0 connected)

USB Port: 1 v3.0

Misc: Rackmount

Hi  @D-C

The price difference wouldn't be a big problem, and it's not that big anyway :)

In terms of space, he prefers it to be as compact as possible.

He doesn't want a rack, although the OC300 works without one?

I think the OC220 wouldn't be much worse in terms of performance?
It would surely have longer firmware updates, since it's much newer, right?

Thanks :)

@lukass2000,

Seems the oc220 is checking all the boxes, especially if you don't care about rackmounting.

  • The oc300 can sit on a shelf and is not too big, but it is bigger.  The oc200 has the keyhole hanging option so it's easy to attach to a wall or structured media enclosure.
  • The oc300 has a faster core processor, but CPU benchmarks have the oc220's processor beating the oc300's in multithreaded use because it has twice the cores and faster clock speed.  With the same amount of memory my guess is the oc220 is actually faster.
  • With the extra flash memory space the oc220 will probably have a longer support lifespan.

I'm thinking there will be an update to the oc3xx series to distinguish it from the oc220 in the next year or two.

Hi  @lukass2000

Thanks for posting here.

The power consumption of the two controllers might also be interesting, since they run 24/7.

Considering these, I believe OC220 would be a better fit for your requirements: it supports POE, consumes less power than OC300, and is smaller.

In terms of performance, there isn’t much difference between the two.

As for the firmware upgrade plans, they are currently aligned, but no one can guarantee what will happen in the future.
