IR Hub tile shows a misleading bell icon that triggers the chime unexpectedly (safety & UX concern)
Model: H110 Smart IR & IoT Hub
Firmware: 1.4.4 Build 251031 Rel.111523
App Version (Android): 3.17.109
App Version (iOS): 3.17.105
Summary
The device tile for the H110 Smart IR & IoT Hub displays a bell icon on the main dashboard.
This icon looks identical to the app’s notifications bell in the top‑right corner.
However, tapping this icon does not open notifications — it immediately triggers the hub’s chime.
This behaviour is unexpected, misleading, and potentially disruptive, especially during nighttime.
Steps to reproduce
- Open the Tapo app (iOS or Android).
- Go to the main dashboard where all devices are listed.
- Locate the tile for the H110 Smart IR & IoT Hub (e.g., “Lounge IR”).
- Notice the small bell icon on the tile.
- Tap the bell icon.
- The hub immediately plays the doorbell/chime sound.
Observed behaviour
- The bell icon on the hub tile looks identical to the notification’s icon used elsewhere in the app.
- Tapping it does not open notifications or settings.
- Instead, it activates the hub’s chime immediately, without confirmation.
- The user receives no warning, no label, and no explanation of what the icon does.
- The chime can be triggered accidentally while scrolling or tapping near the tile.
- The chime plays even at night, which can disturb people in the home.
Expected behaviour
- A bell icon should never trigger a sound directly.
- Icons should be consistent with their meaning across the app.
- The hub’s chime function should be located inside the device settings, not on the main dashboard.
- If a sound‑triggering button must exist, it should:
- be clearly labelled (e.g., “Test Chime”),
- be placed inside the device page,
- require confirmation before playing a sound.
Impact
This design creates several problems:
- Users may tap the icon thinking it opens notifications.
- The chime plays unexpectedly, which can be startling or disruptive.
- There is a risk of triggering the chime late at night or early in the morning.
- The behaviour is inconsistent with all other device tiles in the Tapo ecosystem.
- The dashboard becomes unsafe for quick navigation because a single tap can trigger a physical action.
This is not just a UX issue — it is a safety and usability concern.
Additional notes
- The bell icon appears only on the hub tile, not on IR devices added through the hub.
- The hub tile is always present, so the chime button is always exposed.
- The icon duplicates the app’s notifications icon, which increases confusion.
- There is no way to disable or hide the chime button.
Request
Please confirm whether this behaviour is intentional.
If the bell icon is meant to trigger the chime, it should be moved to a safer location and clearly labelled.
If not, it may be a UI oversight that needs correction.
Thank you for your attention.
Best regards,
John
