Model: TL-SG2218
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

Hello all,

I have two 8 port switches that I'm looking to replace with a 16 port switch. I have an OC200 with controller version 3.2 to control a pair of access points (eap245 v1). The SG2218 should be controllable by the OC200, but I can't seem to find whether or not a new SG2218 would be adoptable by version 3.2, or if there are different hardware versions (the downloads section mentions a v1 and a v1.6) where this makes a difference. Do I need to worry about the switch's hardware version, like with the access points (where newer hardware versions don't work with this controller version and new firmware cannot adopt older hardware versions)? And if so, can the firmware of the switch be flashed to a version that is compatible with the controller version like with the OC200?

Thanks!

@lazymongoose I've just ordered the TL-SG2210 to supplement my existing network that's managed by an OC200 controller. (hardware V2.0, Omada V5.9.32).

Do you have to leave your OC200 on V3.2 for some reason? There's a TP-Link guide that says "Regardless of which type of Omada Controller you are using, you can upgrade it to different forms of Omada SDN Controller 4.1.5." ...

See https://www.tp-link.com/au/omada-sdn/controller-upgrade/#content-1

The oldest firmware version I see on the SG2218 support pages says it needs Omada controller V4.1.5 or above, the next most recent one has a minimum requirement for Omada V4.3 and above, and the current one has a minimum Omada controller spec of 5.6.

@paulrob Thanks for your response! I think I'm bound to V3.2 because of the EAP's being V1. When I got it, it had version 5.something and it wouldn't find my ap's. The only solution I could find at the time was to flash V3.2 onto the OC200, which did solve the problem. But if I could somehow get the EAP's to work with a more current version of the controller, that'd be amazing. I'm a bit concerned I'd have to replace them though...

So it looks like this switch would currently not be adoptable by my OC200. On the other hand, I don't actually need any advanced networking features at this moment, so as long as it has a few PoE ports, it's good enough. I'm sure at some point I'll upgrade the EAP's (it's just that they work quite well and I have no hardware that supports wifi 6 or up) and with that the controller version. Thanks again for the info!

@lazymongoose Okay. There's a thread over here that says your EAP245 V1 isn't compatible with the later versions of Omada...

@paulrob alas, it is as I feared. I hope it's not as much of an issue with newer devices. Considering the network is simple (the controller only controls the access points) I'll ignore the fact that a new SG2218 doesn't work with the current controller for now, and at some point in the near future I'll update the access points, upgrade to controller version 5 and adopt the switch then. Thanks again for your help!
