Hi!

Replacing the old isp broadband router/wifi-box with a M5 solution and will just check with you guys if I do the right setup here.

This can be connected in two ways:
1. Modem -> Switch <- M5
2. Modem -> M5 -> Switch

I guess option two is the best security wise? Let the M5 handle blocking/filtering incoming unwanted traffic, closing ports, etc
before sending the data to the switch and wifi.

Any other settings/configs to be aware of with this type of setup?
Will the security be as good (or better) as another regular broadband router?

@BingoBonzo

I believe you cannot connect a switch to M5 or in fact any of Deco products.

The two lan sockets at the back of M5,M4 are on same switch and connected to same network.

or in other word, M4/M5 are just wifi end points and cannot connect to any switch unless you have a managed WiFi switch.

Your network at most can be like this

Modem-> Deco (Mx) -> Extenders/Mesh

Modem-> switch -> Deco(Mx) -> Exender/Mesh

Modem-> Router  (might have or have not an integrated switch ) -> second switch

            ->  Deco(Mx) -> Exender/Mesh

You can also install two or more deco M4/M5 on same switch after router and have them on same or different IP range but each with their own dedicated Extenders

@B72

Hi,

I have seen Alexandra has replied to another post.

Except for the wireless backhaul/ connection, we could also connect a network switch or another Deco node to the main Deco, such as

https://www.tp-link.com/support/faq/1794/
