Hi

ive just got the new Archer MR600 4G router but seem to have strange behaviour when plugging in external antennas.

When i use the supplied antennas I get an ok signal so I thought I would try an external antenna. I’ve tried both a directional and an omni-directional antenna but both lower the signal?

Is there a setting on the router to state you are using a different antenna?

cheers

Hi Nick,

I've bought an external antenna for my MR600 as well, though haven't actually tried it yet because the rabbit ears are working fine. When I asked Support whether it would be OK, they came back with some nonsense about it being the wrong connectors and invalidating my warranty. Huh? What's the point of detachable antennas if you're not supposed to use your own???

If I test it, I'll let you know how I get on.

Clive

@NickP

First, we do not suggest you to change antenna,cause the antennas on one device work alternately, while if you want to change the external antennas on your router/AP to meet your special Wi-Fi requirements, we recommend you to replace all of them with same type of antenna other than change only one of them.

Meanwhile, except the gain of the antenna, the signal strength is affected by other factors, like the 4G facilities environment, obstruction.

You can adjust their position to give it a go.

@LoopyLu

Sorry for the trouble caused. You can test it with the external antenna and post the updates.

Best regards.

@Kevin_Z

I also have the Archer MR600 4G router (in Sweden). It works OK with the included antennas, especially after finding the best spot in the house. But I cannot get it to work with an external antenna. Even though I get better values in the router with my external Poynting antenna (full signal-strength, SNR of 25dB), the upload direction is so bad (less than 0,5Mbit) and communication drops. I see not solution to original post on problems with external antenna. Is this TP-routers not supposted to work with external antennas?

Pretty bad that this thread is left unanswered/unsolved.
I'm about to purchase this router but being in a very remote location I need to be sure that external attena will work.

As poster above stated : why else would TP Link have made the antenna detachable on the MR600 ?

@Murt I've checked the app (and webpage) for the MR600 and I can't find anywhere where it allows you to change the antennas to external.  Also the manual doesn't mention anything about the setting.

I have connected the Poynting XPOL-1 and the signal is worse which is obviously affecting the download/upload speeds.  Looking above there doesn't seem to be an official word on wether external antennas are actually supported so your comment about choosing from internal to external antennas contradicts this.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I have just recently purchased the MR600 Cat 6 4G+ router and also purchased the Eightwood 4G antenna from Amazon.

I'm located mid cell for band 20 and edge cell for band 1 and I normally get 50% signal strength for band 20 and 25% for band 1 on 4G+ Vodafone.  I installed the 4G antenna in the loft with the TPLink router as my office is upstairs and used a 10M Ethernet cable to go through the ceiling into my office.  I directed the 4G antenna in the direction of the mast and now get 75% signal strength for band 20 and 50% for band 1 smiley

@Fl1nst0ne out of interest what speeds were you getting before the external antenna? Was there any setting to change to tell it to use an external?

@apt I must confess, I didn't check the download speeds before installing the 4G antenna as it was already waiting to be connected up and as I got 75% signal strength as opposed to 50% I presume the download speeds are better?
