Model: Archer C90
Hardware Version: V6
Firmware Version: 1.0.2 Build 20190116 rel.40967(5553)

This router only has 1 USB port.   I have a single drive attached to the USB port.   In Windows 7, I am mapping to the USB drive attached to the router.

However, it appears the router is changing the name of the volume from SDA1 to SDB2 indiscrimminately.    As a result I have to keep changing my mapped network drive settings.

What can I do to keep the router from changing the volume name?

I found a workaround:

In Router setup: Basic>USB Settings>Folder Sharing> Turn off "Share All". Specify some folders to share. Now you don't have sda or sdb drive/folder in the first place. Shorter network name, no drive letter switching. Hope it helps.

@Zhanas

In response to ZHANAS workaround,

For me, this is my version info:

On my system, after logging into the router, I have to select ADVANCED tab from the top, and than on the left column, choose USB Settings/Sharing Access.

I did have the SHARE ALL toggle, which I turned off.

Than I:

  1. Clicked on   +ADD
  2. Clicked Browse.
  3. Chose the top level drive/folder so it would select the whole drive.
  4. Than I named the folder SDB1, so all of my existing mapped drives would match....at least that is my hope.

So far, so good.    I will check back after a few days of testing.    I have a few other machines to check as well.

Correction, it is the FOLDER NAME the router keeps changing. On the USB Setting page, under DEVICE SETTINGS, the drive is assigned a FOLDER NAME by the router. And the folder name changes from SDA1 to SDB1. Sorry for the prior incorrect information.

@ZGWSTORES I have exactly the same issue. Exacerbated for me somewhat, as I am doing an overnight ftp backup to the drive. Keeps failing as the drive / folder name keeps changing from sda1 to sdb1.

The changes are totally sporadic and apparently random. Looks like a bug in the tplink wireless access point.

@tplink: please can you advise on a fix?

Kind regards

@ZGWSTORES

No one has published a fix for this.

My router is always on, that is it is not being rebooted or turned off at any point during the day.

I know it is happening on a daily basis because my drive mappings don't always work.   I have to intermittently run a program to reset them based on the drive name changes.

There is a work around on this forum. Look for "USB drive mount changes between sda1 and sdb1"

@ZGWSTORES

The Work around doesn't work. I created the logical folders to be shared for example "New"  When you map the folder my router shares it as "New(sda1)" Which of course changes randomly to "New(sdc1)" in my case. The only way to fix it ,is to reboot the router because there is no manual way to change anything in the disgusting UI for dummies. It pisses me off to no end .I think the REAL solution is to give their products really bad reviews on Amazon and any site that sells or reviews tech. This incomprehensible bad behaviour seems to transfer generation to generation of their routers because TPLink has no (monetary) reason to change it.

@ZGWSTORES

This change takes place while the router is RUNNING.   For example, if you try to back up the USB connected to the router which takes a while, in the middle of the back up the router will change the name of the folder.   At that time your back up fails.

I have the same issue (Archer C7 v5.0). Letters changing about every hour, in the middle of watching some movie. No solution found yet.

What's the router firmware version? Be sure that is up-to-date.

"Letters changing about every hour"

Is it possible to have a screenshot of this? This sounds weird, we will need to confirm.

@Zhanas

This version seems quite old, check to download and install the latest firmware first, then confirm if the issue persists:
