Considering the extender is a dual-band extender, you need press the WPS button twice to connect both 2.4GHz and 5GHz. So now you can hold the WPS button again and verify whether the 5GHz comes on.
If it does not work, you can log into the web UI of RE650 and go to settings-wireless-connect to network page to scan the host 5GHz wifi and enter the password to join it.
Besides, the AV500 can work with RE650. Do you have a single one or a pair of AV500? If it is a single one, you need connect it to the RE650 by wired cable to make it work.
May it help.

The reason why you saw the page attached below is that the extedner is working fine now even though only 2.4GHz has connected to the main router.
In this time, you can log into the web UI of the main router and get the IP address of RE650, then you can use the IP address to access the RE650 and enable 5GHz under settings-network-connect to network page.
Or you can hard reset it, and connect your PC to the default wifi and log into the web UI with tplinkrepeater.net.
Besides, if still the same, please tell me the model number of the main router.
Good day.

You mentioned that RE650 only works on 5GB, but the led for 5GB is off; is that a typo?
What is the current led status of RE650? Can you get internet from it now?
Please log into the web UI of RE650 and show us a screenshot of the status page.
What is the model number of your main router as well? Does it support 5GHz?

Hi Kevin, sorry for the typo. I confirm that the 5GB led is OFF. Yes I can get internet but not sure this is through TP- Link. I followed the WPS instructions and the result is that POWER and 2.4 GB leds are ON and blue as well as the WIFI button. AS to the position of the extender I placed it half way from the router. There is a 10 cm wall between the extender and teh area where the connection was low.
The router is a FASTGAte , the most recent Fastweb modem and i am sure it supports 5GB. Please let me know what other info you need to assist me.
Many thanks

Hi Kevin, many thanks for your continued support. I tried what you suggested but the situation did not change. The repeater searches for the 5GB but at the end of the process only the 2.4GB led is on. I then tried to access the WEB UI but cannot get to the page it only provides a support page by TPlink (see below) . Does that mean the repeater is not recognized and I continue using the PC with no extended coverage?

Hi Kevin, many thanks for your continued support. I did what you indicated and it finally worked out!!!
Regarding the AV500, I have the model with two apparatus: one connected to an electrical outlet and to the router by cable. The other connected to an electrical outlet in another room. May I continue to use it together with the RE650 and get improved wifi connection or it may interphere with the RE650.
Again many thanks for your assistance.

Great to know that you figured it out finally.
And Yes, you can use the AV500 together with RE650 to boost signal strength.
Good day.
