Model: Archer C2
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version:

I using C2 as access point connect to the main router via wired network for many year. I leave the WAN connection down and use only the land port to the main router.

I would like to expand the coverage of the wifi.

With old complex layout house, that area connot be reach by upgrade the existing device.

It really need to add more device.

I have td-w8961nd sitting in the box. I found the this model support WDS so I gave it a chance.

Following is the layout.

C2 is closest to the area I would like to expand.

Main router: 192.168.0.1 ----- [Wired Connection] ----- Archer C2: 192.168.0.4 ----- [WDS] ----- td-w8961nd: 192.168.0.10

I configure WDS on both device. I can open the setup page of all device from every wifi.

The issue is when I connect to td-w8961nd's wifi I cannot use the internet. I check the gateway is 192.168.0.1, DNS is 192.168.0.1. Ping to 192.168.0.1 is success.

Not sure what is the problem.

Is it going to work If I buy new Archer C6 to replace C2 and move C2 to the new location connect to C6 by WDS?

Or it better to use range extender but the price of RE305 and C6 is same in my country? I think C6+C2 is better than C2+RE305.

After I tested more I found that.

I don't need to enable WDS on td-w8961nd to make local connection work on td-w8961nd.

I still not able to connect to internet.

I found that adding some static route to main router on C2 can get access to internet but the FW not allow adding default gateway as static route.

@IIFrOdOII

Hi, to boost wifi signal with TD-W8961ND, you need enable WDS function on it and connect it to the Archer C2 by wirelessly. But you do not have to enable WDS on the Archer C2.

Below is the instruction you can refer to: https://www.tp-link.com/support/faq/327/

@Kevin_Z

I tried that configuration but it not even connect to my C2. DHCP not work cannot get IP from main router, after set static IP cannot ping to C2.
