Model: Archer VR2800
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.4.0 0.8.0 v0050.0 Build 160518 Rel.50944n

I have an Archer VR2600 which I've been using a few years. I've recently purchased some Unifi kit, and want to now use the archer purely as a vdsl modem, connecting out to the WAN port of my unifi gateway. However, I've been unable to get an internet connection working in this way. In normal modem/router mode, the internet is fine (BT Internet VDSL)

To set it up as a modem only, I deleted the old internet PPPoE settings and replaced it with "Bridge Mode". I kept the VLAN ID as 101, the same as it was for the standard internet connection setup.

I've changed the LAN gateway settings to 192.168.2.1 so it doesn't conflict with the USG gateway, which uses 192.168.1.1 (as the archer did before)

I've also tried turning off DHCP and wireless settings but it didn't seem to help

To test it outside of the Unifi environment I tried connecting an ethernet cable directly from the LAN1 port to my PC, and setting up a new broadband PPPoE connection that way - this also didn't work.

Can anyone please advise me what I'm doing wrong, or how to diagnose this further?

Many thanks

Toby

@Toby200

Hi,

I found this thread when trying to get my VR2600 into bridge mode to use with an EdgeRouter X.

I finally managed to do it by resetting the VR2600 and starting from scratch.

When you reset you create a password and then log in.

Then I did the first step of the wizard where it asks about country but once that first step is done, I stopped following the wizard steps and went to the Advanced tab, clicked on Network and then Internet.

I added the bridge as a new WAN connection and set the vlan id to 101. This seems to be the main thing to do - I could never change the router into bridge mode if I followed the installation wizard after resetting the router.

You can check the bridge connection from a windows pc by creating a pppoe broadband connection.

I turned off all of the dhcp and wifi and set the IP address of the router to a different address than my Edgerouter.

You can still access the web interface if you connect an ethernet cable directly to the router and set a static IP on your PC.

I also managed to set the Edgerouter up so that I could access the vr2600 gui when it was connected to the edgerouter by following the steps at https://owennelson.co.uk/accessing-a-modem-through-a-ubiquiti-usg/

Hope this helps!

Steve

@Toby200 did you manage to do this Toby? Yoh seem to know a lot more than me. I'm ditching archer 2600 for amllifihd, but lost. For now i have them both running.

@taffytimps  no sadly not quite. I've had to leave it acting as a normal router, and then just connect one of the lan ports out to the wan on the usg gateway.

I also had to move it to another subnet, 192.168.2.1. I turned off the wifi,  though you don't have to.

It works, but isn't ideal.

@Toby200 hi again Toby, I'm a real newb at all this and don't even know what bridge mode is to ne honest. I have mine set the same right now. What is the problem with just switching wifi off.  Also why did you have to switch to a different subnet.

Cheers.

I've put the amplifihd router in bridge mode as easier. I believe this should stop conflicts and i will have two wifi networks. Tplink and amplifi. I will plug my office cable back into the tp link and get rid of the tp link wifi extenders. Not quite my goal of getting rid of tplink completely, but i think best compromise.

@taffytimps The router I have doesn't do a proper ppoe bridge mode (i.e. bridging the feed direct with the internet provider), or at least I couldn't get it to work.

Because of this, I've had to run it as a "normal" router. But then my main router is the Unifi Gateway - and you can't have two routers on the same subnet or they'd conflict, hence moving the VR2600 to a different subnet as they both default to 192.168.1.1

The wifi you can set up however you want. I just didn't need the extra wifi network for anything so shut it down.

Hope that helps.
