Hi all,

Pretty much a newbie when it comes to these kind of things but I am starting to become very frustrated in my attempts to set up my TL-WR940N device as an Access Point. In my case the TL-WR940N is connected via an ethernet cable to the router.

The router has its own wifi SSID and password but it is not strong enough to reach the bedroom. In the bedroom I have just placed a Chromecast device thingy but for it to work it needs to have the same network ID as in the rest of the house. Hence my desire to set the TL-WR940N up as an Access Point.

I have tried everything I could find and think of. The QuickSetup: no joy: connected but no internet. Manually setting it up: no, same story: connected but no internet. Tried all the forum posts and solutions posted there: sorry, did not work for me. Also tried setting it up as a range extender but also that did not work (due to lack of signal strength?)

I do notice that the TL-WR940N IP address (when it works under its own SSID and stuff), is outside the range of the router but with the same Subnet Mask. This doesn't mean a whole lot to me so that really shows my level of knowledge.

When setting the thing up with its own SSID and stuff, it works ok (connected and internet access) but that means i need to go to the living room to change movies on the Chromecast: not very practical.

Please help!

Router:

LAN address 192.168.2.254

Subnet          255.255.255.0

HDCP start    192.168.2.1

HDCP end     192.168.2.200

HDCP server  on

TL-WR940N

LAN IP address   192.168.0.1

Subnet         255.255.255.0

WAN IP address   192.168.2.20

@wecoyote

After three attempts carefully following the instructions and numerous reboots, it appears to work!

Thanks!

Hello,

May I have your network diagram that how devices are connected to each other? What is the model number of your host router?

It seems the WR940N is not properly configured or connected in your network if you want to make it work as an Access Point. Please refer to the guide below to reset it to the factory defaults and reconfigure it:

How to configure the TP-Link 11N wireless router as Access Point?

May it help.

@Kevin_Z

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for your reply. In my setup i have a router conencted to the outside world (provided by my local internet provider model ZTE H369A if that makes any sense), The router is then connected to a 24-port switch. The router, as said, serves as a DHCP server with start address 192.168.2.1 through 192.168.2.200 with primary DNS 192.168.2.254.

I have ethernet cables througout the house (no coax). In addition to the wifi of the main router, I have two additional routers to get decent wifi coverage in the house: one in the masterbedroom and one upstairs. One of the ethernet cables goes to the bedroom and that's where i want the TL-WR940N to connect to the main router.I need to have the TL-WR940N router in the master bedroom to have the same SSID as the main router if I want to get Chromecast to work. Setting it up as reapeater also did not work; probably because the signal of the main router is not strong enough in the bedroom.

i have tried to set the TL-WR940N up as Access Point by means of the QuickSetup and got (of course) good signal strength but no internet. I've searched the forums on how to fix this and tried them all. Same result. Many reboots did nothing in terms of getting it to work.

In router mode the TL-WR940N has an IP address of 192.168.2.20

Not sure if this provides the requested additional info...

Thanks!
