Model: Archer VR600
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: Firmware Version:0.2.0 0.9.1 v0074.0 Build 170504 Rel.68210n

Not sure if this has been asked/resolved previously... but I am not totally sure the right terms.. so please excuse my description :)
I have an Archer VR600. Previously I have used the ISP supplied gear without this issue occuring

I have a number of "servers"... from the PiAware in the loft that sends data to a server about the air traffic flying overhead, to the Asustor NAS drive

One piece of kit connects, if I use http://pi-star

Others, such as using http://piaware, does not connect. I have to use the IP address to connect to that server. Same as http://asustor - I have to use the IP server

What have I got set up incorrectly? They are showing up fine on the router list of devices

I know it has worked in the past on, for example, the BT hub

And if it helps... if I use http://asustor then it fails. https://asustor works (albeit with errors due to the server not being https

Many thanks

@Mr_E_Mann

Hello,

1. Please check some basic settings on the modem first.

Login to the modem>> go to DHCP Server>> Client list. Please make sure the client device you are trying to open the port for is showing up under the Client list.

It is suggested to set up Address Reservation for this client device, so the Virtual Server entry will take effect all the time.

Please double-check the Virtual Server settings on the modem referring to the FAQ below: https://www.tp-link.com/en/support/faq/1748/

2. If the settings are ok, please do the following tests:

Find another laptop, connect it to your LAN network, enable Telnet: start>control panel>programs and features>turn Windows features on or off, select telnet client, and confirm.

To test if the service port X can be accessed from LAN: run>cmd>telnet LAN IP + Port X

To test if the port X is opened: run>cmd>telnet wan IP +Port X. (If access failed, it might be ISP has a restriction on the port/service. And, we strongly suggest you turn off firewall on the computer. Windows 10 firewall blocks connection from WAN by default.)

If it still does not work. please send us some screenshots of the Port Forwarding settings and telnet results.

For more information, please refer to the FAQ below: https://www.tp-link.com/en/support/faq/785/

Thanks for your cooperation and have a nice day!

Hi @Sunshine. Thank you for getting back to me on this. And apologies for the delay in responding - been a manic week here :)

So to pick up on the list below...

1. DHCP

Yes, it appears in the DHCP list... as piaware... with the IP address

I haven't set an address reservation for this... as it should be accessible through the http://piaware address, which would be IP agnostic on the internal network (the whole point of this thread :))

2. Telnet

Telnet does seem to connect... but with a "bad request" ... but it does return something from the piaware box...

and if I try to connect to the IP through a browser, that works fine too:

3. Screenshots of Port Forwarding & telnet

Image of telnet above... not sure where the "port forwarding" one is on the router? (But wouldn't that be to direct connections outside into the network? This is purely an issue within the internal LAN that I cannot see this device through the "piaware" name but can through 192.168.86.35)

Many thanks

Simon

@Mr_E_Mann

Hi, this is worked before on BT Hub, right?

I have checked this issue from our senior engineers. They may do some tests to check the issue.

Our engineer will email you, if you are willing to do further analysis, please check your inbox.

Thanks for your cooperation and support.

Good day.

I think there is a mix of my brain remembering wrong and updating some configs which broke other things
I've systematically been through the things that aren't working... and some were due to changes made to configs... the one that I thought always connected doesn't still. However reading through various forum posts it appears I am likely memory-deficient and it didnt actually work on BT

In summary... a PEBKAC error (problem exists between keyboard and chair) ... or more likely an ID-10T error :)
