Model: TL-WR841N
Hardware Version: V11
Firmware Version: 3.16.9 Build 151021 Rel.76995n

I have downloaded the firmware from the Hong Kong support site (I am based in Hong Kong).

There are 2 versions, and i have tried them both. both give same error:

Error code: 18005
Upgrade unsuccessfully because the version of the upgraded file was incorrect. Please check the file name.

I am DEFINITELY using the firmware for the correct hardware version (V11) which is clearly stated in the router's config HTTP config tool , on the "Status"  section:

Firmware Version:

3.16.9 Build 151021 Rel.76995n

Hardware Version:

WR841N v11 00000000

These are the 2 firmware downloads avail which I have tried to upgrade to:

@Malec

Oh I see, sorry about that.

We have confirmed again and it seems that the current version on your WR841N is for the US version, which can be found on the US website:

https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/download/tl-wr841n/v11/#Firmware

As you know, it's not suggested upgrade the device firmware across regions and it will be against the warranty, and a wrong firmware upgrade may damage your router or cause the router to not function properly.

Hope you could understand. Good day.

@Malec

Hello,

Before this firmware update on the router, you need to unzip the downloaded file first, you may install a WinRAR or WinZIP on your Windows computer.

Then refer to the below instructions to upgrade the firmware:

@Kevin_Z  thanks for your advice, however this is not the problem.

I have of course unzipped the zipfile and uploaded the .bin file via to the web interface when I tried to upgrade the firmware.

I tried this for both versions, and both failed.

The .bin file names are:

wr841nv11_wr841ndv11_en_3_16_9_up_boot(150616)

wr841n(EU)_v11_160325.bin

I even tried to rename the file to a smaller file name, as some systems dont like long filenames. I used the short filename (8.3 )naming convention .

I have upgraded many routers over the years, so I generally know how to go about it. Posting on this forum because there are no existing fixes that I can find on this forum or google search.

Any further advice welcome
