My router is Archer C9 v3 (EU). I’ve been having problem with the 5Ghz channel SSID not being shown sometimes in my MacBook Pro 2017 model laptop. When I turn on my MacBook, the 5Ghz SSID shows and works perfectly. The problem occurs when for some reason the router gets restarted or I switch to a hotspot/any other SSID. After that I don’t see my 5Ghz SSID anymore. 

 

I have dug deeper into this problem. For those unfamiliar with MacOS, for your information MacOS has a system report option where  we can see different parameters of Wi-Fi Interface of the machine under Wi-Fi sub-section. So when I turn on my MacBook and the 5Ghz SSID is available, System report shows the below status:

 

 

Country Code: X0

Supported PHY Modes: 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac

Supported Channels: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 100, 104, 108, 112, 116, 120, 124, 128, 132, 136, 140, 144, 149, 153, 157, 161, 165

 

Here, the country code is detected as X0. Please note that I am based out of Dhaka, Bangladesh. But the X0 country code simply means that my Wi-Fi adapter of the MacBook could not identify the country/region. My Archer C9’s 5Ghz channel gives 4 channel options (36,40,44 & 48). Please notice that all these 4 channels are available in the supported channel list above.

 

Now, when my 5Ghz SSID disappears, the system report shows the below status:

 

 Country Code: BD

  Supported PHY Modes: 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac

  Supported Channels: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 149, 153, 157, 161, 165

 

Here you can notice two things, Firstly, the country code is detected as BD which is correct (Bangladesh). Secondly, the supported channels no longer have the 4 channels offered by my router. So I can assume that when the country code is wrongly detected, my MacBook shows the 5Ghz SSID, but, when it is correctly detected, it doesn’t show the SSID anymore. So I can conclude that my MacBook Pro shows the 5Ghz SSID based on wrong configuration/detection of region.  In the web interface of my router there is no option to change the region, I can only set the Time Zone which is configured correctly.

 

But it is also to be mentioned that, my iPhone detects the 5Ghz SSID all the time. So who’s at fault? My router or MacBook Pro? How to fix it?

Hello,

 

Sorry that this is not an issue on the Archer C9(EU) V3 as it only supports band 1 for the 5GHz, which is designed to comply with that of CE regulation.

5GHz band 1 channel: 36~48
5GHz band 4 channel: 149~165

 

If the country code of your MacBook Pro 2017 is detected as BD and you can no longer find the C9 5GHz network anymore, that means it can only work with 5GHz band 4. If you want to resolve this issue, you need to get the C9US version. However, we don't suggest customers upgrade the device firmware across regions, as a wrong firmware upgrade may damage your router or cause the router to not function properly and it will be against the warranty.

 

It is suggested to contact your reseller to replace it with a US version if it is still running the TP-Link official firmware.

This is very similar to the problem I have with my Archer C9, 5 Ghz. Earlier I thought it was because I had set the radio power to low as I am seated very close to the router. But, now I believe it is a more serious problem with router firmware.

This issue will probably be resolved by dd-wrt firmware upgrade.

Hello, thanks for your reply. I'm afraid replacement of this product might not be an option now as my product is 2 years old. I bought it in December of 2017. Previously I did't face this issue as I didn't have a device that supports 5Ghz channel. For your information from TP link's web site I downloaded the US firmwire and installed it. Seems like it's identical. Stil only those 4 channels are showing. I talked with many people, I found out in Bangladesh, the authorized seller sells the EU product mostly. I have talked with my friends who own different models of TP Link routers like C6, C7, Some of them were purchased very recently. All of them have the EU version and their devices don't find the 5Ghz network either. 

 

In this case, I don't know what to do but to install a third party firmware like DD-WRT. I'm afraid I'm gonna lose some key features like TP-link DDNS support. In this circumstances, can you suggest me a different solution please?

Will they replace my router with the US version, since it's been 2 years? If don't agree to replace, is there a way you guys can persuade them to do so?
