Model: TL-WR840N
Hardware Version: V6
Firmware Version: 0.9.1 4.16 v0001.0 Build 180614 Rel.40494n

Hi all,

I have set up a TL-WR840N Router in Range Extender mode through WIFI connected to a main router. The settings I have configured are the following:

Main Router:

DHCP Enabled

Gateway 192.168.1.1

Subnet mask 255.255.255.0

DHCP Range start 192.168.1.33

DHCP Range end 192.168.1.149

DNS1 80.58.61.250

DNS2 80.58.61.254

Range extender (TL-WR840N):

  • Network tab (LAN):
    • LAN Type Static IP
    • IP Address 192.168.1.47
    • Subnet Mark 255.255.255.0
  • DHCP
    • DHCP Server Disabled
    • Start IP Address 192.168.1.150
    • End IP Address 192.168.1.199
    • Address Lease Time 1 minutes
    • Default Gateway 192.168.1.1
    • Default domain empty
    • DNS Server 0.0.0.0
    • Secondary DNS Server 0.0.0.0

Once configured everything works properly and the devices connected to the second network (I have set up a different SSID) are routed properly and can connect to the internet, having provided a IP in range (e.g. 192.168.1.91). However, after some hours, the devices lose the connection to this secondary network. When I connect again to the secondary network a different IP out of range is provided to any device connected to it, for example:

IP Address 169.254.245.246
DNS 255.255.0.0
Gateway empty

Resulting on losing internet connection. The only way to solve this is disconnecting and connecting the TL again (even putting the device with static ip and connecting to the wifi doesn't work).

Any idea on which setting am I configuring wrongly or what should i do to get a more stable connection?

Thanks!

@jecht

Hello,

Please reset the WR840N to factory defaults and reconfigure it by referring to the below guide to connect it wirelessly to your existing wireless router:

https://www.tp-link.com/support/faq/1385/

But if the connection is not stable, you need to confirm below:

1. When the WR840N stops working, with your computer connected to it, please check if you still get an IP address/gateway from it.

2. Ensure the internet connection on your main wireless router is stable, you may connect a phone or laptop to it and confirm.

3. How far away between the 2 routers? Try to move the WR840N closer to the main router.

4. Ensure that the firmware of the WR840N is up-to-date.

Good day.

@Kevin_Z Thanks for your answer.

I tried twice to reset to factory and configure it as range extender and it happened over the course of the past 3 days.

The guide you are mentioning below has a slightly interface than my router's one (probably it is a different model, but i have a lot less options in my left menu) and i don't find in my interface things like Enabling WDS.

Also, answering to your other points:

1. I do receive an IP as mentioned on the OP but it goes out of range . I do not receive an gateway

IP Address 169.254.245.246
DNS 255.255.0.0
Gateway empty

2. Internet connection on main router is stable. i connect to it and there are no issues.

3. Both routers are not very far from each other, something like 10-15m. I am using WIFI 2.4GHZ and the signal intensity on the TL Router is 70%.

4. Firmware is up to date,

Thanks

@jecht

Hello, thanks for getting back.

May I have the model number of the main router? Is there any setting on it to terminate the connection? Please help confirm.

Then confirm on the WR840N, when there is no internet access on it, what is the WDS status? Is it still RUN? Kindly show me the screenshot when it is not working.

BTW, we would like to escalate your case to our engineers, and they will help follow it up, if you are willing to do further analysis, please check your inbox and respond.

@Kevin_Z Thanks for replying.

The main router is an ASKEY RTF3505VW, provided by my ISP. So far i havent seen any strange settings. the configuration for IP, DHCP and DNSs are in the OP.

When the Router is not working, I am actually not able to access www.tplinkwifi.net, so it is not possible from my side to get a screenshot. The router shows the middle and right leds as green.

Something interesting i found is, i tried with 2 devices when the router was not working

Device A: DHCP enabled and automatic IP retrieval. Connected through an IP out of range. No internet connection

Device B: Set up manual IP connection (disable DHCP). Connects properly.

Device A: automatically gets an IP in range and internet connection is stored.

So I guess there must be some setting off and by forcing the connection through a valid IP it is restored. Do you have an idea on what the problem might be?

Thanks!
