I set up my RE650 as an access point. It got connected but the wifi is not protected.
I tried to modify the configuration to encrypred but it's not accepting the change and goes back alone to no password mode
Any hint?

Please disconnect the cable between router and tp-link device and see if you could save settings.
It is recommended to change a different Web browser or a different device (a different computer / cell phone) to change the wireless settings and save again.
If still the same problem, for ' it's not accepting the change and goes back alone to no password mode' is there any Error message may I have a photo of it?
What is current firmware & hardware version of your range extender? Is it EU or US version on the back label of your device.
