Model: TL-WA850RE
Hardware Version: V7
Firmware Version: 1.0.1 Build 200923 Rel.57191n (6985/8575)

Hi, I cannot seem to get more than 50Mb/sec out of the TL-WA850RE configured as an access point.

The device is connected to a 1G hub which speedtest on a PC to the same hub gives 200Mb/sec.

The device is on channel 11, my main router (some distance away) is on channel 1.

Is there anything I can do to improve speed for the TL-WA850R as a WAP. Box claims N300 300 Mbps 2.4Ghz

Many thanks.

@FXV300

Leave it to Auto then, let the device determine the appropriate channel width.

By the way the ethernet port of the device is 10/100mbps capable - specs.

That means even if you have it connected to 1000mbps hub port, there still be a bottleneck with theoretical max of 100mbps.

Wireless ethernet is a half-duplex connection, so theoretically you won't get more than 150mbps bandwidth of a 300mbps connection, and then again you're limited to 100mbps by the ethernet port.

Have you observed the wireless connection association speed (PC, phone or whatever you're testing with) when connected to TL-WA850RE ? Are you connecting at 300mbps ?

@FXV300

Try setting channel width at 40MHz.

@FXV300

Tried that and it slowed down speed by about 8Mbps.

This WAP is in an office where only 2 devices connect to it. Two other nearby routers are on channel 1 and 6.

I have tested with low medium and high power, not any better.

May have to return this as I was expecting better bandwidth.

Nothing much in the log file:

@terziyski

are you saying the  WiFi is limited to 50Mbps when the ethernet is used as source for the device due to the 100Mbps port ? If so how is the N300 achieved ?

No. You've misinterpreted what I was trying to explain. You're limited to 100mbps when the ethernet port is used - AP mode.

As for the N300 it could be achieved when using the device in range extender mode - wirelessly, and again N300 means no more than 150mbps bandwidth, because of the half-duplex technology.

This is marketing wizardry. Calling it N300 when the best it can do is 150Mbps. As for your an ethernet chip which is not 1Gigabyte is beyond belief, those gigabit ethernet 1 gigabit controller chips have been around for about 20 years or so. So basically in WAP mode best I can get is 50Mbps if using Ethernet connection. This Sucks

@FXV300

Sorry for relay. N300 is the Wireless Link speed between RE and wireless client :

https://www.tp-link.com/support/faq/2265/

In your case, actual speed is capped by Ethernet port, and also speed get reduced when signal being transmitted in the Air.

If your Bandwidth is more than 100Mbps, you could consider RE/AP with a Gigabit port to extend Internet. A dual-band RE/ AP should have a better performance if devices  supports 5Ghz.

Thanks for the reply. In that case the RE is working to spec. My gripe is that this is not mentioned in the product specs.
