Model: RE650
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

I cannot achieve anything like the potential speeds of my home network using the RE650 (in extender mode).

My home wifi runs at 100MBPS consistently as per speed test result below:

If I plug in the RE650 in the dining room, maybe 10-15m away from the main wifi router, my Android phone shows the same speed is possible, 100 MBPS. But if I plug in the RE650 in that location, the attainable speed on the main wifi network suddenly drops to 36MBPS - I can only assume channel interference:

Then if I connect via the RE650 itself, the speed drops to around 9MBPS, which is obviously pathetic when it's telling me I have a strong signal and can be further away from the main router:

I don't know how to find out the hardware or firmware versions of this unit although I expect that could be relevant. I have the TP-Link Tether app but can't see any way to get to that information. Is there a standard admin IP address for the RE650 with more details available? I tried 192.168.0.254 while connected via wifi on my Android phone but it gave a 404 error.

Why would it be so slow? The best it has achieved is 35MBPS when mounted outside the back of the house, about the same physical distance from the main router as in this test. It should do much better. What should I try?

EDIT: Even more strange, the 5GHz range extender wifi is super fast, almost 100MBPS, even when the 2GHz network is 9-10 MPBS in the same location. There are no other 2GHz signals in the house that I know of.

@qlddrones

Thank you for your updated information.

At RE650 location: Router 2.4Ghz speed 25Mbps  vs RE 2.4Ghz speed 12Mbps

This should be the reasonable 2.4Ghz speed on the range extender.

Range extender repeat router's signal so it follows router's Wi-Fi channel.

@qlddrones

Thank you for your detailed post.

May I know do you own a dual- band wifi router, what is the model of that. I suspect the 36Mbps main WiFi speed  is the 2.4Ghz from router, that would explain your case.

Range extender receives data from the router and then forward it to the connected clients and speed will decrease during the transmission,  the speed of router at RE's location is quite important.

1. To help isolate the issue, you could set up different SSIDs for 2.4Ghz & 5Ghz on the main router. Also use different SSIDs e.g _Ext as WiFi names for range extender.

2. Please test the 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi speed from Router at  the Same Location of RE .Later test RE's 2.4Ghz speed.

May I have  the speediest results on router & RE and also the wifi link speed on your device (computer or mobile device) when they connected to router and RE?

3. To boost 2.4Ghz wifi speed, you could try a different 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi channel on the main router, and try 2.4Ghz channel width 40Mhz for higher speed and set wireless mode as 802.11n. Please scan for Wi-Fi channel using Wi-Fi analyzer APP or software and select a relatively idle channel for 2.4Ghz.

4. You could check firmware of range extender via guides here.

(To login web UI of range extender) https://www.tp-link.com/support/faq/1398/

Yes I do have a dual band wifi and it does automatically configure both 2.4 and 5.8 GHz bands to use the same network name. After some research I've managed to get them to use separate names, but now I cannot get the RE650 to reconnect to the 5GHz wifi. The button flashes to indicate it is searching for WPS, the router WPS light flashes, the blue 5GHz led flashes, but never goes solid.

@qlddrones Hello,

You could try to change 5Ghz band to channel 36/40/44/48 and try WPS again, or try web page/ Tether to set up the range extender.

May I know the model of router, thank you.

@Solla-topee OK I got it reconnected to both networks now. FYI at the moment the RE650 is about 12m (two rooms) away from the router.

The results I am seeing at the RE650 now are:

- 2GHz wifi from router - 78 mpbs via link, 25 mbps download, 28 mbps upload on speedtest

- 5GHz wifi from router - 260 mbps via link, 95 mbps download, 37 mbps upload on speedtest

- 2GHz Extender wifi - 173 mbps via link, 12 mbps download, 25 mbps upload on speedtest

- 5GHz Extender wifi - 866 mbps via link, 100 mbps download, 35 mbps upload on speedtest

When located at the main router I am seeing:

- 2GHz wifi from router - 156 mpbs via link

- 5GHz wifi from router - 1 gbps via link

- 2GHz Extender wifi - 104 mbps via link, 12 mbps download, 25 mbps upload on speedtest

- 5GHz Extender wifi - not visible unless I walk back to the RE650 and connect from there, then 117 mbps on link

When I am in the main bedroom at the far end of the house, one of the locations I am trying to get coverage for (RE650 says it's too far away in there):

- 2GHz wifi from router - 43 mpbs via link, 13 mbps download, 11 mbps upload on speedtest

- 5GHz wifi from router - 58 mbps via link, 75 mbps download, 37 mbps upload on speedtest

- 2GHz Extender wifi - 115 mbps via link, 11 mbps download, 17 mbps upload on speedtest

- 5GHz Extender wifi - 175 mbps via link, 93 mbps download, 35 mbps upload on speedtest

Where can I change the channels etc used by the RE650? If I change the main router channel the RE650 follows it and stays on the same channel.
