I'm shocked! I purchased this TD-W8960N cause I thought it was a powerful beast, but it is not unless mine it is defective. On my mobile phone it shows -25 to -30 dBm at less than 10 inches away from the router antennas. In some places at home my phone disconnects when the signal drops below -70bm, however my laptop it is always connected because of the better antenna.

That's fine BUT, I installed my old Linksys WRT54G and the phone shows -3dB at the same distance from the antennas. That's crazy! Or is it that I overvalued the TP-LINK?

What do you think guys? Does anyone have compared signals with other routers. Should I assume that mi router is defective? Any trick to squeeze more power other than replacing antennas?

Lesm, you can post compared signal strength screenshots on your phone.
As you said, if your phone is nearly close (only 10 inches ???) to W8960N but it shows bad signal strength, you can try to adjust some wireless settings, for example, wireless channel, channel width. Besides, make sure your network is properly secured.

Mavis I did more tests.
This time I used inSSIder in my laptop. I tried all Modes, changed Bandwidths and the result is always the same at a distance of a mere 3 ft: -49dB. Then I changed Tx power to 20% and the signal droped to -53dB, that's some 2.5:1 (which is not 20%). My Linksys put a signal of -13dB at the same oposite distance.

By the way, Tx signal at channel 11 is +1dB compared to channel 1, which is acceptable.

Hi,
Eight months have passed. I installed this tp-link in my weekend house. Now the wireless drops every now and then. But, some times the signal drops for a second but other times it takes some time to recover. Definitely I purchased a defective unit. Since I use it during weekends I will wait until it dies for good. Then will purchase from another brand for sure.
