Model: Archer AX73
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.0.4 Build 20210717 rel.62921(5553)

I purchased an ax73 router to replace an older Billion we were using as an access point off the Archer VR1600v suplied by our ISP, TPG

The VR1600v is Hardware v2, Firmware 0.1.0 0.9.1 v5006.0 Build 200810 Rel.53181n and obviously it is maintained by TPG.

The New ax73 is Harvware v1 Firmware 0.1.0 0.9.1 v5006.0 Build 200810 Rel.53181n

We had to set the new router up as an access point because my wifes work laptop is windows 7 HP elitebook and couldn't see the SSID in her wireless connection manager.

I beleive the problem there is updated wireless driver.

However in debugging the issue with inSSIDer i find that while the VR1600v 2.4ghz max rate is 300Mbit but the ax73 as an access point only provide 144Mbit max data rate.

I tried unsetting some of the smart new features in the ax73 like the combination both 2.4 and 5ghz networks.

So while I may be able to get my wifes work to upgrade or replace her computer she's actually better off connecting to the ISP supplied VR1600v

More on this.

I installed inSSIDer on a windows 10 desktop with a archer ax3000 in it.

The max on the 5g wifi went up to 2041Mbit and the max on the 2.4g went to 238Mbit still less than the vr1600v 2.4g at 300Mbit however The 5g on the VR1600 is 1300Mbit

I installed inSSIDer on a brand new M1 Macbook pro and it had the same as the 2012 Macbook pro 144 2.4g and 1733 for 5g

As a smart connect with both 24 and 5g bands combined it just lists as 2041Mbit

Regardless of what inSSIDer reports as the max throughput if i do a TPG speedtest via wifi it says my connection is 70-80Mbit with an upload of 12-15Mbit

If i do the same test on a wired connection i get 250Mbit down and 20Mbit up. Here's two screen prints showing wireless and wired.

I'll look at it all again when they pump out some new firmware for his router.

@Lukraun

From what you are describing, it seems that the 2.4G channel width may be limited to 20MHz when the Smart Connect is enabled, this mostly happens when there is a lot of interference with the network. Try to disable Smart Connect and modify the channel width of the 2.4G network to be 40MHz, then reconnect to the network to confirm.

@Kevin_Z I was able to get my wifes laptop wireless driver updated by pestering the desktop support guys. She now sees the new router wireless. That will be a common issue with this router.

I realised why the VR1600 has a higher max data rate on the 2.4ghz band it's because it uses 1 +1 channels whereas the ax73 just uses two of the six antenae for 2.4ghz and only one channel.

Regardless the point is moot. Even though the router has a max speed value on it's wireless connections, I never get that to an external site.

I am on a 200Mbit plan with TPG and get 250Mbit down and 20Mbit up when i do a test on a wired connection. If I do the same test on a wireless connection, regardless of wifi version or physical 802.11 standard, i only get 90Mbit down.

So to test the advertised speeds for this router

Wireless 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi 6 up to 574Mbps (40Mhz 2X2)
Wireless 5Ghz Wi-Fi 6 up to 4804Mbps (160Mhz 4X4)

I would have to have an ax3000 in two desktop computers or another wifi 6 adapter in a laptop or similar on the same wireless network to see what the transfer rate is.

Now that my wifes work laptop is working I can swap out the VR1600 temporarily to see if the ax73  performs better as a router as opposed to an access point.

The other thing I noticed is that the ax3000 tx50e installs and shows up in windows as a tx200 160Mhz with a windows driver that the windows 10 operating system says is newer than the ones I downloaded from tplink
