Region : UnitedKingdom

Model : TD-W8980

Hardware Version : V1

Firmware Version : 0.6.0 0.6 v000e.0 Build 130304 Rel.38108n

ISP : Plusnet

Have spent most of the day trying to get port forwarding to work! U an trying to run a mail server and am forwarding ports 25, 110, 995 to a PC on my LAN, only problem is the ports never get there. I can connect quite happily if I wire a laptop to the router BUT as soon as I try to connect from externally either by mail.domainname or IP I am not able to connect. Using telnet I can't connect to the ports either. If I forward port 80 I still connect straight to the router rather than trying to connect to the mail server for webmail. At the moment I am having to forward all mail from the server to a google account just to read it!!!!!!!!!!! :(
Anyone have any ideas?

Dave

Did you make test outside your network from another IP address?

I made a connection via my Plusnet account so it would have an external IP address. I even tried changing DMZ to point to the PC with the server on it. Failed to onnect on ports 110, 25, 995, 143, 80 or 8080.

Have you making test in local network area? Maybe it's problem with firewall?

I can connect if I connect directly (wired with local IP address) via router. If I try to connect external on port 80 (even with DMZ) I get the router log in. I have not got the firewall enabled.

I think but I'm not sure that you have to disable remote management on this router, because router has reserved 80 port for himself webserver.

If I try to connect https it freezes and can't connect, if I try to connect to remote address when wired it still can't connect.

Hi Zantos,

There is a new firmware version on the download page. I couldn't get port forwarding to work on the version you are running either. I'm not sure what they have changed in the new version as there are no release notes! As of yet I've not seen tried out port forwarding on this router as I have a web server I need to keep running so am restricted in taking it down to try with this 'new' router. There is also some info about the 8980 on the 8968 page that may or may not be of help.

Hi vtr1rider
Have (I believe) the latest version of firmware having downloaded it yesterday, as you say unsure what improvements have been made. I now have it "limping by" with port forwarding "sort of working". If I connect with an "external" IP address i.e. not through the router by wi-fi or wired connections (which would use a 192.xx.xx.xx address) then things appear to work. However if I try to connect via wi-fi or wired connection then I cannot access the mail server which makes it pretty pointless. With my old router I could have email clients set up on my mobile phone with the server address set as mail.mydomain.co.uk and it would download mail while connected by ANY method, now this would seem to only work if I am connected through an external source. Connecting via the router and trying to use webmail just gives me the router login page.

Hello,

I am in a similar situation with the TD-8980. I tried to configure Virtual with the necessary ports and took the additional step of using port forwarding for those same ports. I have the latest firmware installed and when I try to connect via DDNS (which is working), I just get the router logon page, no access to the server I need. So I know that DDNS is working (also confirmed by enabling this and testing on the router).

When I tried to connect remotely however nothing outside the regular port 80 used for the router would come up. I ran a packet capture and found SYN -> RST,ACK meaning that the ports are not open. I know they are open on the server as this is set in my server's firewall and I can access within my local network. However trying to access remotely is causing issues. I will try some more tests and let you know if I succeed.
