Hallo,

 

I'd like to know if it is possible to setup this extender as an access point ?

 

As you can (hopefully) see in the screenshot the button to change the "mode" is not there.

Would a firmware upgrade help here? Or is there any other way?

 

What Hardware Versions do support the AP?

We are sorry to tell you TL-WA850RE V2 does not support AP Mode due to hardware limit, the port is only an output port. 

You may need to consider the extender with higher version like WA850RE V3 and above version to use AP mode feature,here is a related FAQ:
