WR841N - speed drops dramatically :(

Model: TL-WR841N
Hardware Version: V14
Firmware Version: 0.9.1 4.17 v0001.0 Build 200903 Rel.58674n

I have this access point in another part of the house conneted to the main router by a 10m ethernet cable. It works ok but the speed dramatically drops.

If I plug the same ethernet cable directly into the back of the computer (with the other end in the router) I get download speeds of 120mbps+ but when I put the ethernet cable into the TL-WR841N access point and then connect the computer to it the speed is only around 25mbps :(

Any ideas?

I've done a factory reset of the access point but that's not made any difference.

Thanks.

@simontplnkt6oO

Is the WR841N working in Access Point mode? Is it connected to the main router via LAN or WAN port? Please follow this guide to reconfigure it into Access Point mode:

https://www.tp-link.com/support/faq/1384/

Please compare the link speed on the computer when it is connected to the main router directly via the 10m Ethernet cable and when it is connected to the WR841N as follows:

https://www.tp-link.com/support/faq/2899/

Are they the same?

Hi @Kevin_Z - thanks for coming back to me.

Yes already set to access point mode and connected via WAN port.

I'm using a Mac and the Network Utility app has now been depreciated.

Using the speed test app you can see below the test at 16.21 was with the ethernet cable from the router connected through the WR841N - the second test at 16:22 was with the ethernet cable plugged directly into the computer - you can see a big difference :(

@simontplnkt6oO

What if you reconfigure the WR841N to work as an AP manually by connecting the main router to one of its LAN ports? You can follow Case 2:

https://www.tp-link.com/support/faq/1384/

Please be aware also there is no other device that connects to the AP that is using the bandwidth when you are doing the speedtest on the Mac.
