If PS4 failed to connect extender's Wi-Fi  you could try some suggestions here: 

• Set up different SSIDs for Extender's 2.4G & 5Ghz which are different from main router, thus we could distinguish Wifis from router, and 2.4G or 5G wifis from extender.
•  e.g. _Ext 2G, _Ext_5G,  check if PS4 could connect to extender's 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz 
• How to change wireless settings of TP-Link range extender on Tether APP
• Update PS4 System Software
• Set up Static IP on PS4  ( IP: an IP within router's IP range, Subnet:255.255.255.0,  Gateway: router's IP, DNS 8.8.8.8), here is guide found online: https://ps7dns.com/ps4-ip-address-to-static-ip/
• If the concern persists, may I know the exact model of your PS4, can I have a photo of error message when PS4 failed to connect to Ext Wi-Fi?
