Model: Archer VR300 Ā
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.2.0 0.8.0 v009c.0 Build 200706 Rel.75268n

Hello,

I recently encountered some problems in online console games, some games just have a pop up that says: "Strict NAT type detected" but work fine.

Some games don“t allow me to connect to online at all.

I have found several guides that suggest this could all be fixed by several things, for example, setting up a static IP, Port forwarding, setting up virtual servers, enabling DMZ or UPnP.

I have tried to follow several of these guides, but those always used a different UI than my modem has, sometimes the same thing would be called something different and after fiddling around with the settings for days to the best of my ability, I ended up always resetting the modem to factory settings since I only managed to make things worse.

Please help me figure this out.

Edit: $20 to anyone who can help me get mario kart online to work

Playing on-line games may require opening a particular ports on your VR300.

Every games can have a specific port and protocol that it needs opened to a device your're using for gaming.

First make sure you Internet IP address is public (successfull port-forwarding depends this):

How to use the port forwarding (or 'Virtual Servers' in VR300) you can see from VR300 user guide - Chapter 11.2 (there's an example in there).

Keep in mind that your gamig device (phone, PC, etc.) should be set with static LAN IP address for port-forwarding to work properly.

You can use Address Reservation for that purpose (same user guide - Chapter 13.1.3):

Finally, it is suggested to keep the UPnP ON on your VR300:

Thus if port opening is needed the VR300 will open these ports automatically.

@terziyski Thank you for the explanation.
I went to myip.com and the site shows an IP that is different to the one I see in the "Status" section of the modem setup site.

Does that mean my IP is not public and this won“t work?

Am I able to set my adress to public through the modem setup page or do I have to contact my ISP?

Yes, if that's the case then that's the reason for your issue and the port forwarding won't work as expected.

You can't set a public IP address by yourself - you need to contact your ISP to discuss this posibility.

Private IP addresses are in these ranges:

Class A: 10.0. 0.0 to 10.255. 255.255.
Class B: 172.16. 0.0 to 172.31. 255.255.
Class C: 192.168. 0.0 to 192.168. 255.255.

CG_NAT: 100.64.0.0 to 100.127.255.255

  @terziyski Thanks again.

Is that different from setting up a Static IP? Or is that just another name for the same thing?

Because my ISP charges a lot for that.

Nintendo sucks.

The best scenario is to have a public static IP address on your VR300 Internet interface.

If it's a public dynamic IP address you can mitigate this registering no-ip.com or use the TP-Link cloud account:

Either way it has to be public IP address so the port forwarding will work as expected.
