Model: TL-WR840N
Hardware Version: V6
Firmware Version:

LAN led light on my TD-8616 ADSL2+ Modem isn't lighting on when i try to connect my new TL-WR840N. I tried switching the cables, connectin my pc directly to my modem and everything seems fine, just the communication between my router and my modem doesn't seem to be working.

When you connect the WR840N to the TD-8616 LAN with an Ethernet cable, does it display a WAN port unplugged error on the WR840N's web interface page? How about the WAN LED on the WR840N, is it off also?

How about other LEDs on the WR840N? You may login to its web interface page, and go to System Tools > Factory Defaults to restore the router. Then try to set up a PPPoE connection on its WAN as follows and put in the PPPoE username and password provided by your ISP to see if it can connect to the internet:

How to install TP-Link wireless router to work with a DSL Modem (PPPoE)

BTW, when did you purchase the WR840N? If it still cannot detect the WAN connection, the WAN port might be faulty, you may contact the local tech support to be advised further or request a replacement:
