Deco M4 not connecting to nearest deco
Deco M4 does not connect to nearest deco, instead it connects to the main one which is farthest and results in slow internet speed. I have 4 Deco M4 mesh devices and each one only connects to the main Deco (which is connected to the modem).
What's the point of this Deco system if it cannot connect to the nearest Deco ? It connects to the nearest Deco when I set it up for the first time only and that time can see that the speed is very good. But after some time it automatically switches to the main Deco which is farthest and this the speed becomes very slow.
This is really frustrating, why can't we manually select which Deco to connect to ? This is really frustrating, being a user with 4 Deco devices and also having recommended it to many friends, I'm really disappointed with this low quality service.
Clearly tp-link does not seem interested to solve this issue for its customers.

@Alexandre. that sounds good, but I'm unable to select just the master_bedroom for upgrade, the dropdown has a single value "M4R" , is it okay to select this for upgrade. It looks like it applies to all the Decos ?

To make sure you upgrade just the master_bedroom, login to its Web management screen. You can find current master_bedroom IP address in Deco app under its Satellite Deco page.
Use that IP address to login, same password, and you'll see limited Web interface (no network map, for one). You should be able to update just the master_bedroom firmware through that Web interface.

@Alexandre. I've upgraded the firmware and am now able to select a signal source for master_bedroom from the app! But when I click save, it throws an error :

I had that issue. It arises from beta code and Deco updating TP-Link cloud with configuration changes. If one change has not propagated through the cloud yet, the next will fail. You do two changes: switching Auto to off and choosing preferred Deco. Must do just one at a time and ensure it went through before doing next..
This is how you can make it work:
1. Close Deco app. Pause with this for about 10 minutes.
2. Open Deco app. Check what do you have under Signal Source. If you have Auto enabled - disable it, but change nothing else! Just disable Auto, do Save, go back and close Deco app. Give it few minutes.
3. Open Deco app. Do you see Auto disabled? If not, Close Deco app and give it few more minutes.
4. Open Deco app. You do see Auto disabled. Now, choose preferred Deco. Do Save. Close Deco app.
5. Again, wait few minutes. Open Deco app, see if Auto is still disabled and preferred Deco is what you set. If not, close Deco app and wait again.
----------
When you see under Signal Source what you wanted it to be, it's done.

Try standard troubleshooting. Power off that Satellite Deco, keep it off for five minutes, power it on. Reboot smartphone with Deco app installed.
Screenshots below is how it looks when it works. Notice that when I switch Auto to off I see list of all Deco and there is checkmark after Living Room (Main) Deco, to which Satellite is connected currently. That same name is on top of the screen, after Current Signal Source.
Do you have that checkmark after Main Deco, when you flip Auto to off?
I push Save and configuration is saved immediately. I open it back and button "SAVE" is grayed and I have the list of Deco to choose from:
Give it another try, with just Auto set to off and try to Save it.
If that does not work, you may need to get TP-Link Support involved. Either open new topic "Unable to turn Signal Source Auto selection off" or reply to the topic where TP-Link announced beta firmware, I gave you the link to it.
Sorry, but this is as far a I can get you.

Hi, Sorry for chipping in, I happen to see there also are Deco M4 v2 in the Mesh system and the signal source feature is only supported on Deco with firmware 1.1.0/1.6.0 installed. So I think when you try to choose the Deco M4-V2 as the signal source, the error might pop up.
Fenjo Nice to see you again and I see you commented on the Deco M4-v4 1.1.0 post as well. So far the beta firmware for Deco M4 v2 has been ready yet.
As for the speed issue, you are welcome to send an email to support.forum@tp-link.com or start a new thread here with more details about the speed you have got on Deco M4. We can check whether there is any workaround.
And if you haven't tried Deco APP 3.0, please try to install the latest APP first so that you could share a picture of your current network map as well as the signal strength of each satellite Mesh node.
Thank you very much.
Best regards.

It is logical to assume that you only need Satellite Deco with 1.1.0/1.6.0 to configure it to connect to any other Satellite Deco. To prove that, I just configured my Satellite Deco M5 with 1.6.0 firmware (Office) to connect to Satellite Deco M9Plus that is on 1.5.6 (Bedroom).
I have screenshots to prove it and I am leaving it that way for next 12 hours, so that you can check it on your side for my account, if you want to.
He should be able to configure his M4(V4) on 1.1.0 to connect to M4(V2) that is on 1.5.5, too. The error message he reports I've seen it as well when I used M5 beta firmware 1.6.
By the way, if you (or Engineers) have write access to his TP-Link account and Deco mesh settings in your cloud, you may be able to configure that link on your side, setting proper values in database or what else.
He wants his master_bedroom Deco with 1.1.0 connect to bedroom Deco.
If you can't do that configuration on your side, please assist him with troubleshooting and/or look at why that error pops in his Deco app.
Thanks.

@Alexandre. I haven't been able to change the signal source of the master_bedroom Deco, I get the same error while trying to save any changes like turning off auto or switching the source. Is it because the master_bedroom Deco is M4 (V4) and the other 3 are M4 (V2) ? Now aren't they supposed to be same model M4, which is why I purchased the 4th Deco M4, so why are they not compatible, because while purchasing we don't have an option to select hardware version number. Now is there a way to upgrade the V2 M4 Decos to V4 ?
