Dear forum,

I have a TP-Link Archer VR400 V3 connected to the Internet via the DSL line setup for ADSL2+.

I also have a 3G/4G LTE modem (LG2120) which I use as a backup when the ADSL line fails but I need to unplug the VR400 and plug into the LTE modem.

Is it possible to connect the 4G LTE modem to the TP-Link LAN4/WAN port as a backup solution to the ADSL connection?

It seems the "Back up Solution for Internet Access" only works with a 3G/4G USB modem plugged into the USB port??

Yes, "Back up Solution for Internet Access" only works with a 3G/4G USB modem plugged into the USB port.

You can't use the LAN4/WAN port for an internet connection back-up. This port works as WAN port, when VR400 is configured in "wireless router" mode.

ok, thanks for clarifying this. Could I add a load balancing router? Something like the TL-R470T with both modems connected to the load balancer?

That's correct - this is the way it should be done to have an Internet failover/load balance feature.

If you want to set VR400 in bridge mode, use this story for details.

I would suggest to make a VR400 configuration backup first, so you have a restore point if anything goes wrong.

Then re-configure VR400 Internet connection by deleting the existing and adding a new one (of bridge type) or modifying the existing one as a bridge type.

ok, I got a TL-R470T load balancer which works great. However I'm not sure how to configure the VR400 in bridge mode. When I go to WAN settings and Add a connection, then select Bridge, I get Error: 85901 - PPPoA does not support single-PVC-multi-connection. The VR400 is using PPPoA ADSL for connection to the ISP. What am I doing wrong?

sorry @terziyski, I just re-read your post, you did say to delete (or edit) the initial connection before configuring Bridge mode

I just noticed that you mentioned your ISP is using PPPoA connection type. The story I pointed you, gives an example with PPPoE encapsulation.

It would be best to contact your ISP and ask them if it's possible to use PPPoE encapsulation in their network, because you want your VR400 in bridge mode:

 

If they ask why's that, you can describe your network topology and the idea that you want your public IP address on your new TL-R470T load-balancing router.

 I have put in a request to my ISP. If they dont support PPPoE is there an alternative where I leave the leave the modem in router mode and let it do the connection via PPPoA, then configure the load balancer as Dynamic IP and end it with double NAT?

Yes, you have that option. Actually load-balancing feature has nothing to do with having your public IP address on the TL-R470T WAN interface.

The double NAT matters only if you have any local services that need to be accessed from outside your local network.

However, even under double NAT you can mitigate this by using port-forwarding or DMZ on the VR400.

I do have a VOIP phone on my network, so double NAT might be a problem for VOIP SIP ?

Im not having much luck lately.

My goal is to have two modems, VR400 ADSL modem and a Netgear LB2120 LTE modem connected to the TL-R480 load balancer with both modems in bridge mode. My first obstacle is the VR400 only supports bridge mode when using PPPoE and my ISP only supports PPPoA so I need a work around for that. 2nd problem is with the LB2120 modem which connects to the load balancer ok, but after about 5 minutes I start getting DNS request timeouts. Then randomly it starts working again then randomly fails again.

The internet connection is fine, it's just the DNS timeouts which I'm pretty sure in something happening in the load balancer because I can connect the LB2120 direct to a PC no problem.

 

Has anyone noticed this "DNS request timed out" behaviour before?
