An update on my previous post, it turns out my ISP does support PPPoE, which is great. I successfully connected both modems to the load balancer, BUT I still get random DNS request timeout errors!!

The DNS timeout problem is definitely in the load balancer. Using Wireshark I see DNS ICMP packets coming back from the load balancer saying: Destination Port unreachable

If I change my desktop to static IP settings with DNS = 8.8.8.8 everything works fine. Firmware bug??

Load Balancer: TL-R470T+ Version 6.0.4 Build 20200313 Rel.32850

Perhaps I should post this problem in a different forum?

  @rossack

Have you tried to put an optional DNS like 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1 for this WAN connection:

And then test if the problem persists.

In general any questions regarding TL-R470T+ router will be better attended in the business community.

I did put the DNS values the modem gets from my ISP in the optional fields, but now specifying 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 in the Optional fields, things are looking good. thanks for your help

Unfortunately I'm still getting DNS Destination Port unreachable errors, no matter what I put in the Optional fields. I will post this problem on the business forums.

Getting back to the VR400, I notice when its in Bridge Mode and connected to the load balancer I can no longer get to the admin page by entering its local LAN address. In Wireshark I can see the ARP request go out to find the VR400 mac address but its on the WAN side of the load balancer so no reply is sent back. However, I can get to the VR400 login page if I enter the public address assigned to the modem but I just get Login Failed even though I enabled external access. This may be because the connection is still coming from the LAN side of the mode.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure that you have ping to your VR400 LAN IP address first. If you don't, then you may have to add a static route for VR400 subnet:

You may also have to add an Access Control rule for accessing the VR400 subnet through the WAN interface:

  @terziyski thanks for those suggestions.

Adding a static route lets me get to the modem ok now.
