  • 192.168.0.251 - Archer AX90, AP Mode, in Rooms Area
  • 192.168.0.250 - Archer AX90, AP Mode, in External Area

All AP's have a little overlapping between them, and devices roams gracefully.

Previously I had a Galaxy S8+, with WiFi 5 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac.

No connectivity issue happened with this device.

When my girlfriend upgraded her phone to an iPhone 11 with Wi-Fi 6 802.11ax, she started to have coonectivity issues on WiFi.

Her WiFi connection would drop, and then started to use mobile data.

Since her device was the only one in the house having problems, I just assumed it was Apple's fault.

Recently I upgraded my phone to a Galaxy S23 Ultra, with Wi-Fi 6 802.11ax

I started to suffer the same problem as my girlfriend, and Adroid tells me I am "Connected with no Internet", and switch off to use mobile data.

It would not try to roam to a different band or antenna, neither disconnect from the Wi-Fi.

It will just stay in this state ad-eternum.

This issue mostly happens when the device roams between AP's, but it would spontaneously happen when staying on long period of time assigned to the same antenna.

For example, a long day on the living room, or overnight in the bedroom, but not always.

However it happens frequently enough to be annoying, frustrating and undesirable.

On both devices, disconnecting from the WiFi and reconnecting, restores the connection.

But this approach is less than ideal.

I attempted a few things to mitigate this issue, but none did work:

  1. Disabling Random MAC Addresses in both devices;
  2. Disabling TWT on AX90;
  3. Disabling OFDMA on AX90;
  4. Disabling both TWT and OFDMA;
  5. Disabling Smart Connect;
  6. Setting 5GHz-2 to work on Wi-Fi 6 AX Only (and then repeating all the procedures above);
  7. Setting 5GHz-2 to work on Wi-Fi 6 AX Only + WPA3 Only (and then repeating all the procedures above);

All wireless devices that are 802.11n (2.4GHz Tapo Cameras) or 802.11ac (TV's and previous gen game consoles) don't suffer from this issue.

So, in my current attempt, I disabled Wi-Fi 6.

In this way, my AP's are configured to use 802.11a/n/ac mixed on both 5GHz-1 and 5GHz-2.

Despite the high number of Ax90 AP's, this is a home setup made to be 5GHz Wi-Fi 6.

I have under 40 devices on the network (including AP's), maybe half are wireless.

And only the 802.11ax clients are the ones having issues.

Please, help.

I am very frustrated and disapointed that these AP's ain't working as expected.

This led me to believe TP-Link has an issue with its implementation of Wi-Fi 6 AX.

See footnote on product page:

***This router may not support all the mandatory features as ratified in Draft 3.0 of IEEE 802.11ax specification.

So far, restricting AX90 5GHz mode to 802.11a/n/ac mixed seems to have fixed the issue.

However I bought this router because it is supposed to support the AX mode.

@Kevin_Z , can you have a look at this?

Hello @Cattalins

Thank you for reaching out to us and welcome to the TP-Link community.

As per your detailed description, the 'connected with no internet' issue mainly happens when the iPhone 11 and Galaxy S23 Ultra roam from one AX90 to another. Are all four AX90s using identical SSID and security settings? How about the wireless channel for the 5GHz-2, are they the same or different?

Please be aware that the Archer routers are not able to build a mesh system, even though they are using the same network settings, they still belong to independent networks, so they might be some issues when devices roam between different networks. But I cannot answer why disabling AX helps with it.

If you ask, I would recommend replacing the Archer AX90s with a real mesh system, such as Deco Mesh. Is it possible? We have many Deco models that support AX, you may have a look here.

But if you want to figure out why both phones cannot roam properly between the AX90s with AX enabled, I would like to have a specialist look into this further via email. Please let me know how you would like to proceed. Thank you!

  @Kevin_Z, thanks for joining

Yes, all SSID's are properly configured, sharing the same passwords and LAN backbone.

You can see how the LAN is configured at the beginning of the post.

Tp-Link Ax90 introduced to me the concept of TWT and OFDMA, but they don't seem related to the issue.

As you can see, I toggled them on and off multiple times.

The issue can happen while roaming antennas, but it also happens when the client device stands idle under the coverage of the same AP.

It happens randomly.

At first I thought it could TWT fault, with the wireless client failing to wake up.

As you can see from the attached picture, my AP's do offer excellent signal coverage.

Wi-Fi clients do roam flawlessly between AP's, without mesh networks.

It don't matter if it is a phone, notebook, or a vacuum robot. Roaming works without mesh.

Hence, mesh networks were introduced to simplify Wi-Fi setup for people who doesn't know how to set a network.

See how commercial/campus Wi-Fi are setup. They do not rely on mesh.

Since we are discussing this, AX90 do support OneMesh.

Perhaps might be related to 802.11r; 802.11v; or 802.11k.

I don't have an option to toggle on/off these features, if they do exist.

OneMesh is disabled in every AX90, and they all are configured as AP mode.

And from the forums you can notice lots of customers complaining about "connected with no internet".

I just noticed that in my case this is exclusively happening when connected under Wi-Fi 6 ax mode.

@Kevin_Z ,

This is the same configuration on all AP's

2.4GHz is there for older IoT devices, note that AX mode don't affect them, because they will connect in n/ac mode.

Modern devices will choose 5GHz and/or WPA3 when available.

That's why my cellphone will connect to 5GHz ac, instead of 2.4GHz ax.

If you manage to scalate this issue, I will be very glad.

Hope to find a fix.

  @Kevin_Z

I have changed the 2.4GHz SSID, and forced my cellphone to connect to it in AX mode.

The same issue of "Connected with no Internet" happened randomly in a few hours.

So this issue is happening in both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.

Truly there is an issue with the AX mode.

In N/AC, the connection remained stable.

Thanks
