Model: Deco X60
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version: 1.2.4 Build 20230601 Rel. 37750

Hello community members,

I am sorry if this topic was answered already but I did not find a suitable answer.

My network topology setup:

1. Ground floor.

The Main X60 deco (an older model with no firmware supporting connection preferences) is wired to an ISP modem.

Next, X60 the same firmware version is in a Living room, and that auto-connects to the main unit.

2. First floor

Next X60 unit in a bedroom and that is auto-linked to the main unit. Fair enough.

3. Second floor

Here I bought a newer model of X60 that does support the Connection Preference feature. However, if I switch off auto-configuration and choose manually to link it to the first-floor unit in our bedroom, saving such a configuration always fails. And the mobile DECO application (v 3.5.5) anyhow hangs and needs to be restarted. If you leave the auto-connect option ON, then this unit irrationally connects to the ground floor main unit with a far weaker signal than what could be reached when opting for the first floor, the bedroom unit.

Is there a way not to use the Mesh topology but a sort of mixed one? How can I force the 2nd-floor unit to rather link to the 1st-floor unit instead far away ground-floor unit with a much weaker signal?

Thank you for any hints,

Peter

Hi, welcome to the community.

The signal source selection usually needs the support of both uplink and downlink Decos. If only one Deco supports this feature, Deco APP will still not be able to re-select the linked Deco.

Would you please try to switch the Deco X60 V3-1.2.4 as the main Deco, and leave all 3 Deco X60-V2-1.5.1 as satellite units?

How to Set up the Satellite Deco or a new Deco to be the Main Deco

After the new Deco is up and online, please confirm whether the second-floor Deco X60-V2-1.5.1 could automatically link to the first-floor bedroom Deco?

Wait for your reply.

Best regards.

  @David-TP

Thank you, David, for your hints.

I vaguely remember trying earlier such a combo - the newest V3 X60 Deco unit as the main one -  during a few try/error/luck attempts. But declined such topology due to a rather very slower connection speed with satellite, older V2 versions. That I did not expect, indeed.  And just a simple step to rewire the older V2 unit back to the router and declare it to a new Main unit fixed a connection speed degradation. I might try it once more later when I am "home alone" without "end-users", laugh.

When I was using purely three older V2 units on 3 separate floors, the topography configuration results varied close to random. Sometimes I succeeded with "inline" topography, i.e. desired solution when a 2nd-floor unit got an indirect connection to the ground floor main unit over 1st floor one .. but after any later reboot of units, if it was needed, reverted back to a default star topology configuration. That does not make much sense to me. I was expecting a newly added unit to get connected to the closest one with the strongest signal / fastest speed detected in its neighborhood, i.e. this can be a satellite instead of the main one. But I suspect it is a mobile application that decides about the connection point. And I also believe which WiFi point is your phone connected to is anyhow a decision-making factor when you are adding a new unit.

Thanks, Peter
