Model: Deco X50-5G
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.1.0

I have been setting up a X50-5G in a rural area where the rated 5G signal is good outdoors.

If I simply place the device on a window ledge and use the interior aerial I gat acceptable signal reading and data speeds of between 60mbps (poor weather) and 140mbps. I am more than happy with these results given I have just replaced an Archer MR600 4G router and due to the service provider (and not the router) the speeds have dropped from around 30-40mbps to 2-4mbps.

But I also have a 5G compatible external antenna (2x2 mimo) so I thought I'd attach that to the X50-5G. Did that and enabled the external antenna from the app and was suprised to see that all the signal reading are exactly the same as with the internal aerials only. I would have expected some difference to be honest, be it better or worse (its a directional antenna so I might not have it set to the correct mast).

Is this 'behaviour' to be expected?

  @archercj

Hi, Thank you very much for your feedback.

Have you checked whether there is any difference on the Internet Status page, such as the RSRP/RSRQ/SNR?

Can I have a product link to the external antenna? (You could leave me a direct message if the link is not allowed to be shared. )

Thank you very much and best regards.

@David-TP I did check the RSRP/RSRQ/SNR and didn't notice any significant differences (should have screen shotted them and I am away from the device for a few days, will send some with and without antenna when I return).

As for the antenna it is a Bluespot: 2x2 high-gain 5G antenna for Uk networks. Sent you the link.

I did notice the 5G band change from N1 (normally shows B3,N1 or B3,B3,N1) to N28 (B2,N28 or B3,B3,N28) with antenna connected.

Hi Community,

I saw this comment on an Amazon review and I would like to ask if it is still the case (or ever was):

"The specifications clearly state all the UK 4g and 5g bands are covered BUT what is less apparent (and not listed) is that when you connect an external aerial, you are limited to 5g bands n41, n77 and n78.  In the UK, EE are transmitting at band n1. This would make the antenna useless."

I have a BlueSpot antenna that I would like to use with this as the 5G signal in my area is pretty poor.

Many thanks

Chris

@tp-chris on an advert for the X50-5G it states it ony supports 5G Bands n41/n77/n78 on its 2 External Antenna Ports:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-Deco-X50-5G-Technology-Supports/dp/B0BWS5WBQ7?th=1

I dont think this is true as I have seen N1 and N28 bands beig displayed when the external antenna is selected but I have also posted another support call on here to confirm that the external antenna does work as all my signal strength readings are the same as when internal only is selected

It certainly looks like to be the case for Deco X80-5G, see FAQ article:

https://www.tp-link.com/en/support/faq/3297/

As per X50-5G, maybe someone having this device could look at the admin interface to see if it has the notification about the antena band limitations that are also visible in the screenshot in the FAQ article.

@BenceSzalai  I've had the x50-5g operational for a few months now with an external 5g compatible aerial and am very impressed with it

4g in the area was no better than 5mbps yet when 5g started being seen in the area I gambled on this router. Getting constant speeds of 180-220mbps. Pleased with that.

And I can confirm the main 5g band selected is N1.

@archercj Hi could you tell me the make/model of the antenna you are using, it seems hard to find one that works thx

@archercj THX for your reply, I'll give it a try.  As it's from amazon I can always return it if it is no good for me.
