Model: Archer AX3000
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.2.2

I enabled VPN server functionality of AX3000 to access my home network from the internet. However, I'm experiencing quite low speeds with this.

I have 1000/100 mbps internet connection. Sample speedtest from wired connection: 933.62/102.91 mbps.

Device I use (mobile phone with 5G network) has 194.44 / 50.14 mbps speed at the time of the test.

With this information, my speed when connected to home VPN should be around ~90 mbps. However, I get 17.21 / 8.86 mbps. In other words, I get 16% of my total bandwidth when connected to router VPN. This is extremely slow. Is this a well known issue? 10% or 20% reduction in speed can be justified with extra processing on the router but more than 80% reduction in speed has no excuse.

  @0xde

I guess you are using OpenVPN, as per other threads here in the community, you will find 10Mbts would be normal

Usually WireGuard VPN will be faster, but only some of TP-Link routers support it, refer to: Wi-Fi Routers Support WireGuard VPN Now

  @QRene thanks for linking previous discussions and the link. Good to know I'm not alone in this case.

Unfortunately my router AX3000 does not support nor is not planned to support it, which is a shame. I would expect a Gigabit, WiFi 6 router to support something reasonable VPN speeds when it is marketed as such. Time to move on with another brand, I guess.
